NYDA Grant Programme

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) offers non-repayable grants to young South Africans who want to start or grow a small business. Unlike a bank loan, this money does not need to be paid back if you use it correctly and meet the programme conditions. Grants range from R1,000 for survivalist ventures up to R250,000 for agriculture and technology projects, with free business training, mentorship, and market linkages included.

The programme targets youth aged 18 to 35 who are either unemployed, running informal businesses, or operating early-stage enterprises that need capital to scale. Whether you are selling food from home, running a car wash, or launching a tech startup, the NYDA has a funding tier designed for your stage. Applications are open year-round through the NYDA ERP Portal or at any NYDA branch office.

Scam Alert: There Is No R12,500 Youth Grant

In 2025, social media posts went viral claiming the government was paying a once-off R12,500 to unemployed youth. Both SASSA and the NYDA have confirmed this is false. There is no such grant. The only legitimate youth funding programme is the NYDA Grant Programme described on this page. Never click on WhatsApp or Facebook links advertising free youth money, and never share your banking details with unofficial sources. Apply only through erp.nyda.gov.za or at an NYDA branch.

How to Strengthen Your Application

Most applications fail because of vague business plans, inflated quotations, or missing training certificates. To stand out: write a clear and realistic business plan with actual numbers (not guesses), get three professional supplier quotes that match exactly what you are requesting, complete your BMT early, open a business bank account before applying, and practise your 10-minute pitch until it feels natural. The NYDA is looking for commercially viable businesses that create jobs, not just good ideas on paper.

Common Questions

Not necessarily. For Tier 1 (R1,000 to R10,000) survivalist grants, informal businesses are accepted. For larger amounts, you will typically need a CIPC-registered entity (Pty Ltd or cooperative). Cooperatives must have a minimum of 5 members. Check with your nearest NYDA branch for guidance on your specific situation.
You can apply, but if approved, the main applicant (or the member with the highest shareholding) may be required to resign from employment and provide proof of resignation to the NYDA grant officer. This is because NYDA requires at least one member to be involved full-time in daily operations.
The decision by the CDGARC (the committee that reviews applications) is final. However, you can reapply after improving your application. Common reasons for rejection include weak financial projections, non-compliance (turnover above the cap), missing BMT certificate, or requesting excluded items like vehicles. Address the issues and resubmit.
Yes, but your cumulative lifetime grant total cannot exceed R200,000 (R250,000 for agriculture and tech). So if you received R50,000 in 2024, you can apply for up to R150,000 more. The system tracks your history automatically.
NYDA targets 30 working days for assessment (from application to approval/rejection) and another 30 working days for disbursement after approval. In practice, timelines vary depending on the completeness of your documents and how quickly you respond to due diligence requests. Budget for 2 to 3 months from application to money in your account.
Grants received by businesses may be considered taxable income depending on how they are used. Consult a tax professional or SARS directly. If the grant is used to purchase assets, the tax treatment may differ from working capital. The NYDA does not provide tax advice, but your assigned mentor can help you connect with the right resources.
Yes. Cooperatives are eligible and receive slightly higher caps (up to R250,000 for agri/tech). The co-op must have a minimum of 5 members, all must be SA citizens aged 18 to 35, and the co-op's annual turnover must not exceed R1 million. All members must submit certified ID copies.
