South African Social Grants (SASSA)
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a national agency created to administer and distribute social grants on behalf of the Department of Social Development. Operating across the 2026/2027 fiscal year, these grants provide critical, life-saving financial assistance to millions of vulnerable citizens, including children, the elderly, and persons living with physical or mental disabilities.

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a temporary provision of assistance intended for individuals in dire material need. Unlike traditional grants, the SRD process is entirely digital. You do not need to visit a SASSA branch to apply.

View Requirements →General Eligibility Criteria (The Means Test)
To ensure that the social grants reach the people who need them most, SASSA evaluates the income and assets of the applicant. This evaluation is known as the Means Test.
- Income Limit: You must not earn above a certain threshold. For example, the SRD grant threshold is strictly R370 per month (if you receive more than this into your bank account, you will be declined). Traditional grants have much higher thresholds depending on whether you are single or married.
- Asset Limit: The total value of your assets (property, investments, etc.) must not exceed the prescribed limit. Note: The house you currently live in is generally exempt from this calculation.
- Citizenship Validation: You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee residing in South Africa. SASSA verifies this directly against the Home Affairs database.
- No Double Dipping: You cannot be in receipt of another social grant for yourself (with the exception of the Grant in Aid top-up) or receive UIF or NSFAS funding simultaneously.
Required Documents Checklist
People often arrive at SASSA branches unsure of what to bring, leading to frustration and long delays. Use this checklist before you travel. All copies must be certified by SAPS or a Commissioner of Oaths, and the certification stamp must not be older than 3 months.

How to Apply (Step-by-Step Flow)
There are two distinct application pathways depending on the type of grant you are claiming.
Digital Pathway (SRD Grant)
- Visit the official SRD Web Portal on your smartphone or PC.
- Enter your ID number and your active mobile number.
- You will receive an SMS containing a One Time Pin (OTP). Enter this pin to log in.
- Consent to the declaration allowing SASSA to verify your details with SARS and Home Affairs.
- Enter your personal banking details accurately. Do not use someone else's bank account.
- Submit your application and await an SMS regarding your status.
In-Person Pathway (Traditional)
- Gather all your certified documents based on the checklist above.
- Visit your nearest SASSA regional office or designated community pay-point early in the morning.
- A SASSA officer will interview you and help you complete the application forms directly on their system.
- After submission, the officer must give you a stamped receipt with a reference number. Keep this safe!
Proxy Application: If you are too old, sick, or disabled to travel to the office yourself, a trusted family member or friend can apply on your behalf. They must bring a letter from you authorizing them, a note from your doctor explaining why you cannot visit, and their own certified ID.
Processing Times & What Happens After Approval
Understanding the timeline eases anxiety. Here is exactly what happens once your application leaves the counter or portal:
- The Verification Stage: Before any money is paid, SASSA runs your ID through the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to confirm you are alive and a citizen. They then ping SARS, the UIF, and NSFAS databases to ensure you aren't receiving alternative income. This is why SRD grants remain "Pending" for days.
- Approval Timelines: Traditional grants (like the Older Person's Grant) can take up to 3 months to process fully. The SRD grant is assessed and verified on a month-to-month basis.
- Backpay / Arrears: If your traditional grant application takes 3 months to be approved, you will receive "backpay". This means your first payment will include the money for the months you spent waiting. (Note: Your grant is calculated from the exact date you handed in your application, not the date it was approved).
- Changing Banking Details: If you lose your bank card or change accounts, you must update your details. For SRD, this is done securely via the SRD portal. For traditional grants, you must visit the SASSA branch in person to fill out a mandate form. Never send your banking details to strangers on WhatsApp offering to "help" you change them.
Payment Collection Methods
Once your grant is approved, SASSA provides multiple, secure ways to collect your funds. It is highly recommended to use a personal bank account to avoid long queues.
Direct Bank Deposit
The safest method. Funds are paid directly into your personal bank account (Capitec, Standard Bank, FNB, etc.).
Retail Supermarkets
You can withdraw your grant at till points inside Boxer, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, and USave stores nationwide.
CashSend / eWallet
For unbanked citizens, SRD grants can be sent to a mobile number to be withdrawn cardless at an ATM.
Grant Status Glossary & Appeals
When you track your grant application or SRD status, you may encounter several different terms. Here is what they mean and what action you should take:
| Status Result | What It Means | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | Your application was successful for the stated period. | Wait for your pay date to reflect and check your bank account or chosen payment method. |
| Pending | SASSA is currently verifying your details with Home Affairs, UIF, and SARS databases. | No action needed. Do not re-apply. Check back in 7-14 days. |
| Declined | You did not meet the criteria (e.g., an alternative income source was detected in your bank account). | You have exactly 90 days to lodge an appeal via the ITSAA portal . |
