grantZA Informal Trader Startup Grant

A monthly R1,200 grant to help South African informal traders start or grow a small everyday business.

The grantZA Informal Trader Startup Grant is a small, independent seed grant funded by grantZA and administered by SNEGO GROUP (Pty) Ltd. It is designed for South Africans who are already trading informally or who want to start a small business, but who do not qualify for larger enterprise programmes like SEDA or the NYDA.

Approved applicants receive R1,200 per month to buy starter stock, small equipment, or basic supplies while their application remains active. There is no repayment. This is not a SASSA grant, not a government grant, and not a loan.

The R1,200 is meant to cover small starter items like stock, packaging, and basic tools.

What the R1,200 Can Be Used For

There are no strict receipts required, but the grant is designed for legitimate business start-up costs. Suggested uses:

Stock & Supplies

  • Buying starter stock (fruit, vegetables, snacks, drinks).
  • Packaging materials (brown paper bags, plastic containers, labels).
  • Ingredients and raw materials for food vendors.
  • Fabric, thread, beads, and craft supplies.
  • Cleaning products for service traders.

Small Equipment

  • A basic scale, small cooler bag, or portable table.
  • Umbrella or basic shelter for a street stand.
  • Aprons, gloves, and simple hygiene items.
  • Business cards, printed flyers, or a small signboard.
  • Airtime and data for taking customer orders.

Eligibility Requirements

You must meet all of the following to apply.

Who Can Apply

  • South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • At least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Currently unemployed, self-employed informally, or starting a first business.
  • Has a real trading idea or is already trading in an informal capacity.
  • Has a valid SA ID number and an active South African cellphone number.
  • Has a South African bank account, ATM card, or mobile money wallet for payment.
  • Has not received the grantZA Startup Grant before.

How to Apply

The full application takes about 10 minutes to complete online.

Fill in your personal details, SA ID number, cellphone number, and a short description of your trading business. Keep it simple and honest. Applications open weekly on Monday and close on Friday at 17:00.

The grantZA review team verifies your application. This usually takes 7 to 14 working days. You will be contacted by SMS if extra information is needed. You can check your status at any time on the grantZA status page.

If approved, R1,200 is paid to your bank account or mobile money wallet on the last Friday of every month while your application remains active. You will receive an SMS confirmation on the day of each payment.

Beware of Scams

grantZA never charges an application fee. We do not ask for your PIN, banking password, or a "deposit" before releasing funds. If anyone contacts you claiming to be from grantZA and asks for money, it is a scam. Report it immediately at grantza.org.za/contact-us. Applications are only accepted through this website. There is no WhatsApp application form and no third-party agents.

Be Honest, Be Specific

Applications that give a clear, specific business idea are approved more often. Instead of writing "I want to start a business", write something like "I want to sell fresh vegetables from a stand outside the Kwa-Thema taxi rank on weekdays. R1,200 will buy my first stock of tomatoes, onions, spinach, and packaging bags." The clearer you are about what you will do with the money, the better.

No. This is a grant, not a loan. There is no interest and no repayment. The monthly R1,200 payments are yours to keep and use for your business.
Yes. Receiving the SRD grant does not disqualify you. In fact, many of the applicants we support are also SRD recipients trying to build a small trading business. However, if you get the older person's grant, disability grant, or child support grant as the caregiver, please make sure your bank account can receive the monthly payment without affecting your other grant payments.
No. That is the whole point of this grant. It is designed for informal traders who do not have a Pty Ltd or a CC registered with CIPC. All you need is your SA ID and a real business idea.
The monthly R1,200 is paid directly to your bank account or mobile money wallet. We support all major SA banks (Capitec, FNB, Absa, Standard Bank, Nedbank, TymeBank, African Bank, Postbank) and mobile money providers. Payouts happen on the last Friday of every month while your application remains active.
No. Each SA ID number is limited to one active application at a time. Once approved, you receive R1,200 every month until your application is closed. If your application is declined, you can appeal or reapply after 6 months with a revised business description.
Visit the grantZA status check page and enter your SA ID number and the cellphone number you used when applying. Your current status (Pending, Under Review, Approved, or Declined) will be shown immediately.
You will receive an SMS explaining the reason. Common reasons are incomplete documents, an invalid ID, or a business description that is too vague. You can reapply after 6 months with better information. If you believe the decision is wrong, email [email protected] within 14 days of the decision.
The grant pool is funded by grantZA (SNEGO GROUP Pty Ltd) from platform revenue and voluntary donor contributions. We are not funded by any government department. Full accounting is available on request.
