It is designed for South Africans who are already trading informally or who want to start a small business, but who do not qualify for larger enterprise programmes like SEDA or the NYDA.
Approved applicants receive R1,200 per month to buy starter stock, small equipment, or basic supplies while their application remains active. There is no repayment. This is not a SASSA grant, not a government grant, and not a loan.
Who This Grant Is For
This grant is aimed at people running or starting a very small trading business, including:

Kota, vetkoek, boerie roll, pap and stew stands.

What the R1,200 Can Be Used For
There are no strict receipts required, but the grant is designed for legitimate business start-up costs. Suggested uses:
Stock & Supplies
- Buying starter stock (fruit, vegetables, snacks, drinks).
- Packaging materials (brown paper bags, plastic containers, labels).
- Ingredients and raw materials for food vendors.
- Fabric, thread, beads, and craft supplies.
- Cleaning products for service traders.
Small Equipment
- A basic scale, small cooler bag, or portable table.
- Umbrella or basic shelter for a street stand.
- Aprons, gloves, and simple hygiene items.
- Business cards, printed flyers, or a small signboard.
- Airtime and data for taking customer orders.
Eligibility Requirements
You must meet all of the following to apply.
Who Can Apply
- South African citizen or permanent resident.
- At least 18 years old at the time of application.
- Currently unemployed, self-employed informally, or starting a first business.
- Has a real trading idea or is already trading in an informal capacity.
- Has a valid SA ID number and an active South African cellphone number.
- Has a South African bank account, ATM card, or mobile money wallet for payment.
- Has not received the grantZA Startup Grant before.

The full application takes about 10 minutes to complete online.
Complete the Online Application
Fill in your personal details, SA ID number, cellphone number, and a short description of your trading business. Keep it simple and honest. Applications open weekly on Monday and close on Friday at 17:00.
