About this bursary
The Babette Taute Scholarship offers financial assistance to postgraduate students pursuing full-time Honours degrees in English. Managed by Sanlam Trust on behalf of the Babette Taute Trust, the award covers up to R50 000 for one year of tertiary study.
This funding scheme commemorates Babette Taute, who established a trust through a bequest in 1992. The initiative seeks to encourage high-achieving language scholars, writers, and language practitioners who wish to further their knowledge at an accredited South African university.
Selection focuses on overall academic excellence as well as demonstrated leadership, creative writing skills, teaching ability, or professional achievements in translation and language services.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- Applicants must hold South African citizenship or permanent residency status.
- You must enroll full-time in an Honours programme focused on English language, literature, or applied language studies.
- Studies must be undertaken at an accredited public university in South Africa.
- Candidates need a strong academic track record from previous undergraduate studies.
- Total additional bursary funding for the academic year must not exceed R120 000.
You do not qualify if
- Students receiving other bursary awards that exceed R120 000 in total value are ineligible.
- Part-time students and non-permanent South African residents cannot apply.
Documents you need to submit
- Certified copy of South African ID document or permanent residence permit
- Curriculum vitae highlighting achievements over the last two to three years (maximum 2 pages)
- Original piece of writing in any genre showcasing language abilities (maximum 500 words)
- Outline of the intended Honours course and its English focus (maximum 100 words)
- Details of all other bursaries or scholarships applied for for 2027
- Official academic records and transcripts to date
- Proof of merit, awards, or work as a language practitioner or teacher
- Contact information for two academic referees
- Final academic transcripts including Head of Department endorsement for English marks
Final English results must be submitted by 30 November 2026.
