Who does not qualify

  • Not currently on Disability, Older Person's, or War Veteran's Grant
  • Can manage day-to-day tasks without a full-time carer

  • Reference number of your existing SASSA grant

The medical assessment for Grant in Aid is separate from the assessment for the primary grant. Book it at your SASSA branch when you apply for the top-up.

How to apply

  1. Confirm your primary grant (Disability / Older Person's / War Veteran's) is active.
  2. Book a SASSA medical assessment for the Grant in Aid top-up.
  3. Attend the assessment with clinical records and a doctor's letter explaining care needs.
  4. Gather remaining documents (ID, affidavit of care).
  5. Return to SASSA to complete the top-up application on SOCPEN.
  6. You receive a stamped receipt with a reference number. Keep it.
  7. Application processed within 3 months. If approved, the R580 is added to your monthly grant payment.

Grant in Aid is not a standalone grant. If your primary grant is cancelled or suspended, the top-up stops with it.

The person providing your care cannot be state-paid

Grant in Aid is refused when the person giving full-time care is already paid from another public source (state hospice worker, provincial home-based-care worker, or state-funded frail-care facility). Family caregivers, private nurses, or unpaid neighbours all qualify as the person providing care. Bring an affidavit naming your caregiver at the assessment.
