Who qualifies
- South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognised refugee
- Aged 18 to 59
- Unable to work for at least 6 months due to a physical or mental disability
- Household income and assets under the means-test thresholds
- Not receiving another social grant for yourself (except Grant in Aid)
- Living in South Africa
Who does not qualify
- Aged 60 or older (apply for Older Person's Grant instead)
- Household income or assets above the means-test threshold
- Disability expected to last less than 6 months
- Already receiving UIF or another social grant
- In permanent state care
Documents you bring
- Your 13-digit barcoded ID or Smart ID card
- SASSA medical assessment report (not older than 3 months)
- Clinical records from the treating doctor / specialist
- Proof of residence (utility bill or affidavit)
- 3 months' bank statements
- Proof of income (payslip / UIF card / affidavit of unemployment)
- Spouse's ID and marriage certificate (if married)
- Proof of previous employment if you recently stopped working
The medical assessment is done by a SASSA-appointed medical officer. Book the assessment at your SASSA branch before submitting the application. Bring your own doctor's letters and hospital records to the assessment.
How to apply
- Book a SASSA medical assessment at your nearest branch.
- Attend the assessment with all clinical records and specialist letters.
- Assessor decides: no grant, temporary grant (6-12 months), or permanent grant.
- Gather remaining documents (ID, income proof, bank statements).
- Return to SASSA to complete the application on SOCPEN.
- Receive a stamped receipt with reference number. Keep it.
- Application processed within 3 months. You get an SMS on the outcome.
Temporary grants automatically end after the assessed period (6, 9, or 12 months). You must reapply and be reassessed. Permanent grants are reviewed by SASSA on their own schedule.
Temporary grants can quietly become permanent
If a temporary Disability Grant is renewed on the same condition three times, SASSA will often convert it to permanent status without you asking. Ask at your renewal appointment whether your case now qualifies for permanent classification; it takes reassessments off your calendar and avoids the payment gaps that arise between temporary contracts.
