About this bursary

The Bergrivier Municipality offers financial assistance to local students aiming to study at accredited South African public tertiary institutions. The bursary supports first-time undergraduate degrees, national diplomas, and postgraduate qualifications across any field of study.

This scheme is aimed at supporting young residents from towns across the Bergrivier local area, including Piketberg, Velddrif, Porterville, Aurora, Eendekuil, and Redelinghuys. Priority is given to applicants coming from households with low to moderate monthly incomes.

Successful applicants will be required to sign a formal agreement with the municipality. Hand delivery of application documents to local municipal reception offices is compulsory, as emailed or faxed forms are automatically rejected.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • You must be a South African citizen living permanently within the Bergrivier Municipal area in the Western Cape.
  • You should ideally be between 18 and 35 years old, though applicants outside this age range remain eligible.
  • You must be currently in matric or have completed your matric certificate.
  • You must intend to study full-time towards your first degree, diploma, or postgraduate qualification.
  • You must be accepted or registered to study at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.
  • Current tertiary students must have passed all subjects in their previous academic year.
  • Preference goes to households with a combined monthly income within the GAP housing threshold of R3 501 to R22 000.

You do not qualify if

  • Applications sent by email or fax will be disqualified.
  • Applicants residing outside the Bergrivier Municipal boundary do not qualify.

  • Certified copy of your full tertiary academic record if currently studying
  • Official proof of acceptance or registration on the institution letterhead
  • Official breakdown of study fees for the year on institution letterhead

  • Certified copies of parent or guardian ID documents
  • Proof of household income including salary slips, pension slips, or an unemployed affidavit
  • Proof of disability where applicable
