About this bursary

Bowmans offers full-cost bursaries to South African candidates pursuing degrees in law. The funding program pays for tuition and essential study expenses at public universities across South Africa.

The initiative supports high-achieving school leavers and current law undergraduates who lack financial resources. Bowmans aims to nurture talented legal practitioners and strengthen the legal sector.

Candidates need a minimum academic average of 70% to qualify. Preference is given to applicants from historically disadvantaged backgrounds who demonstrate solid financial need and strong teamwork skills.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • You must hold South African citizenship.
  • You must be currently in Grade 12 or have finished matric.
  • You must plan to study or be enrolled in a law degree at a recognised South African university.
  • You must maintain an overall academic average of at least 70% in your current year.
  • You must show proven financial need.
  • You must demonstrate a passion for law and an ability to work well in teams.

You do not qualify if

  • Non-South African citizens.
  • Students pursuing qualifications outside of law.
  • Applicants with an overall academic average under 70%.

Documents you need to submit

  • Certified copy of your South African ID document
  • Certified Grade 11 final report and recent Grade 12 results if currently in matric
  • Certified matric certificate if completed high school
  • Certified full university academic record if currently studying
  • Motivational letter explaining why you deserve the funding
  • Proof of household income including payslips, pension slips, SASSA grant documentation, or affidavits
