About this bursary
The Canon Collins Trust, alongside the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong group, offers postgraduate funding for scholars studying at South African universities. Successful candidates receive between R20 000 and R100 000 toward their annual academic costs.
This programme targets individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to human rights, open democracy, and social progress across Southern Africa. It helps emerging community leaders acquire the qualifications needed to tackle regional inequality.
Recipients attend annual conferences and workshops organized by the trust. Funding supports up to two years for Masters programmes and up to three years for doctoral research, subject to satisfactory annual performance.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- You must be a national or official refugee resident in South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini, or Zambia.
- You must currently reside in one of the eligible Southern African countries.
- You must be enrolled or applying for full-time, part-time, or distance learning Masters or PhD studies at a South African university.
- Masters degree candidates must hold an Honours degree with Upper Second Class results or finish in 2026.
- Doctoral candidates must hold or complete a Master's degree in 2026, provide a draft research outline, and secure a committed academic supervisor.
- You must show at least two years of active involvement in community or social justice initiatives.
You do not qualify if
- Undergraduate applicants.
- Students attending universities outside South Africa.
- Applicants without citizenship or refugee status in the listed Southern African nations.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted in September 2026 to submit their additional writing samples or research proposals.
