About this bursary

The Canon Collins Trust, alongside law firm Leigh Day, offers financial support for undergraduate law students in Southern Africa. The scholarship assists individuals pursuing an LLB degree at specified South African universities.

Funding provides R40 000 per annum for a maximum duration of two years. Funds are paid into student accounts to assist with study fees, housing, prescribed books, or general living expenses.

Successful applicants must attend an annual conference and take part in Trust networking events. Candidates must finish their studies by December 2027.

Who can apply

You qualify if

Applicants must hold citizenship in South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
Candidates must be registered for an LLB degree at either the University of Fort Hare or the University of the Western Cape.
Students should currently be in their second or third year of study, entering their third or fourth year in 2027.
Final coursework completion must occur no later than December 2027.
Applicants require a strong academic record along with documented participation in extra-curricular activities or community work.

You do not qualify if

Students enrolled at universities other than UFH or UWC are not eligible.
Applicants completing their LLB after December 2027 will not be considered.

How you are selected

Shortlisting focuses on academic performance, references, work history, leadership skills, and community commitment.

Candidates with paid or volunteer experience in the legal sector receive priority.

Selected applicants will be invited to an interview during November 2026.

If no communication is received by the end of November 2026, consider the application unsuccessful.
