About this bursary

The Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary supports creative South African students studying towards a 3-year Fashion Design qualification at the North West School of Design in Klerksdorp. Created by designer Gert-Johan Coetzee together with NWSD, this funding covers tuition and essential design equipment to help launch a career in fashion.

This award aims to assist passionate candidates who wish to build professional skills in fashion. It removes financial barriers and helps strengthen the local clothing and textile industry by encouraging new local design talent.

Recipients gain practical experience through two annual internships at Gert-Johan Coetzee Studios. Funding does not cover living costs, daily transport, accommodation, or materials needed for student projects.

Full tuition fees for 3 years at North West School of Design (valued at R200 000)
A laptop provided by Gert-Johan Coetzee Studios
A Bernina sewing machine (valued at R14 000)
Two annual internship placements at Gert-Johan Coetzee Studios

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You need a Matric qualification with a Diploma endorsement or an equivalent result.
  • You must plan to study full-time for a 3-year Fashion Design diploma at the North West School of Design in Klerksdorp, starting February 2027.
  • You must be ready to commit to the full 3-year duration of the programme.
  • You must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • You must review the NWSD course prospectus prior to submitting an application.

You do not qualify if

  • Applicants who are under 18 years old.
  • Non-South African citizens.
  • Students pursuing qualifications at institutions other than the North West School of Design.

  • Copy of Matric certificate or latest Grade 12 results
  • Copy of South African identity document
  • Social media video submission meeting specified prompt guidelines
