About this bursary
The Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) offers bursary funding for undergraduate civil engineering students. The bursary pays for tuition fees and prescribed books up to a maximum limit of R50 000 per year.
Two schemes are available through this programme. Scheme A supports general applicants who demonstrate financial need. Scheme B is reserved for children and dependants of long-standing IMESA members.
Every bursary recipient is assigned a mentor to guide their studies. Successful candidates must submit proof of tertiary registration and a medical certificate before funds are released.
Obligation
Recipients have no service contract but are encouraged to work in local government after graduation.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- You must study towards a full-time Civil Engineering degree or related infrastructure engineering qualification.
- You must be enrolled at an ECSA accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.
- You must have completed your first year of study and be entering your second year or higher in 2027.
- Applicants for Scheme A must prove financial need and show that they cannot afford tuition without assistance.
- Applicants for Scheme B must be dependants of an IMESA member who has held membership for at least five years.
You do not qualify if
- First-year students entering their initial year of tertiary study.
- Students studying at non-ECSA accredited tertiary institutions.
- Part-time or correspondence students.

- Certified copy of South African ID document
- Certified copy of 2026 mid-year academic results
- Official academic progress declaration signed by your tertiary institution
- Signed affidavit confirming monthly household income and financial situation

- 3Obtain certified copies of your identity document and academic records.
- 4Obtain a signed affidavit detailing household income.
- 5Attach your completed application form and documents to an email.
