About this bursary
Martin & East offers a combined Matric Gap Year and Bursary programme for civil engineering students. Selected candidates participate in a paid gap year learnership in 2027, followed by bursary funding for tertiary studies in 2028.
The opportunity is designed for Grade 12 learners completing matric in 2026. During the gap year, participants gain practical exposure to civil engineering projects and complete a Construction Roadworks and Supervision learnership while earning a salary.
Bursary funding for 2028 is available for diploma or degree studies in Civil Engineering at specific partner universities across South Africa.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- Applicants must be South African citizens completing Grade 12 in 2026.
- You must achieve a minimum result of 60% for Pure Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, or Technical Mathematics, as well as Physical Science.
- Candidates must be willing to complete the full-time Matric Gap Year programme in 2027.
- You must plan to study towards a Civil Engineering qualification in 2028.
- Studies must be undertaken at University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Pretoria, or Nelson Mandela University.
You do not qualify if
- Students who completed matric before 2026 are not eligible.
- Applicants intending to study fields other than Civil Engineering will not be considered.
- Students planning to study at non-approved tertiary institutions are disqualified.
- Candidates who do not meet the 60% minimum requirement in mathematics and physical science will not be selected.
