About this bursary
The Monocle Foundation Bursary provides full funding for South African Black female tertiary students. Formed as an educational trust in 2014, the organization assists candidates who lack financial backing to complete their qualifications.
This bursary targets students entering their second year of study or higher, as well as postgraduate candidates. It prioritises applicants pursuing degrees in key technical, economic, and medical disciplines at accredited South African universities.
Alongside direct financial support, funding includes career guidance and a Microsoft Office training package. Recipients are not required to complete any work-back contract or repay the funds following graduation.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- You must be a South African citizen.
- You must identify as female and belong to a Black population group (African, Coloured, Indian, or Asian).
- You must come from a financial background with limited or no educational funding.
- You must have finished matric and be enrolled at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa.
- You must be entering your second year of undergraduate study or higher, or pursuing a postgraduate degree.
- You cannot be a beneficiary of any other bursary scheme.
You do not qualify if
- First-year university students are not eligible.
- Male applicants or non-South African citizens will not be considered.
- Students receiving alternative bursary funding cannot apply.
Documents you need to submit
- Certified copy of South African identity document
- Certified copy of Matric certificate
- Official academic transcript printed on university letterhead and stamped
- Certified copy of degree certificate if applying for postgraduate study
- Fee estimate breakdown for 2027 including tuition, accommodation, books, and subsistence
- Updated Curriculum Vitae
- Motivation letter to the Trustees outlining your background, field of study, career objectives, and grant request
Ensure all documents are clearly scanned and properly certified before submission.

- 22. Complete your personal details and academic history accurately.
- 33. Upload all compulsory supporting documents and your motivation letter.
- 44. Submit your completed application prior to 1 November 2026.
