About this bursary

The National Film and Video Foundation provides financial support for South African students pursuing film and television qualifications. The scheme covers undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas or degrees at accredited tertiary institutions across the country.

As an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the NFVF aims to expand technical skills and increase participation in the local screen industry. Performing arts, acting, music, and dance programs are strictly excluded from this funding opportunity.

Preference is given to students studying at public South African universities or universities of technology. Travel costs and pre-existing student debts are not covered.

Who can apply

You qualify if

You must be a South African citizen with a completed matric qualification.
You must study or plan to study full-time towards an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in film or television.
You must hold registration or provisional acceptance at a recognized South African tertiary institution.
You must demonstrate strong academic performance, maintaining at least a 60% average if currently enrolled at tertiary level.
Your total family household income must be below R600 000 per year.

You do not qualify if

Students pursuing performing arts, acting, music, or dance degrees.
Applicants with a combined annual household income of R600 000 or more.
Students seeking funding for historic debt or transport expenses.

Certified copy of South African ID document
Certified copy of Matric certificate
Certified copy of latest academic results or academic transcript
Official letter of acceptance or provisional admission on institutional letterhead
Detailed quote or breakdown of annual tuition fees on institutional letterhead
One-page motivational letter explaining your reasons for pursuing a career in film or TV
Proof of household income for parents or guardians if under 21 years old
Proof of income or affidavit of unemployment if over 21 years old
Letter confirming details and amount if receiving other bursary funds

All certified document copies must be less than six months old.
