About this bursary
The Nkangala District Municipality provides financial support to local students pursuing full-time undergraduate qualifications at public South African universities, universities of technology, and TVET colleges. This funding covers essential academic expenses for chosen fields of study.
This initiative aims to assist youth from historically disadvantaged communities within the district. By investing in higher education, the municipality works to develop local skills in technical, legal, financial, and administrative disciplines.
Applicants must reside in one of the six local municipalities under Nkangala. A formal contract with the municipality is required upon accepting the award, and existing student debt will not be settled.

Successful candidates must sign a formal bursary agreement with Nkangala District Municipality.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- You must be a South African citizen between 17 and 35 years old.
- You must reside within the Nkangala District Municipality, covering Dr JS Moroka, Emakhazeni, Emalahleni, Steve Tshwete, Thembisile Hani, or Victor Khanye.
- You must come from a historically disadvantaged background with a gross annual household income not exceeding R180 000.
- You must be in matric or have passed matric, planning to enroll or currently enrolled in an approved undergraduate course at a public institution.
- University students require a minimum 60% overall average for the 2026 academic year.
- TVET college students require a minimum 50% overall average for the 2026 academic year.
You do not qualify if
- Students with existing tertiary debt are not eligible as the bursary does not cover past accounts.
- Applicants residing outside the Nkangala District Municipality area will not be considered.
- Students enrolled at private tertiary institutions are excluded.
Documents you need to submit
- Certified copy of your valid South African ID document
- Certified copy of your Grade 11 final results and latest matric results, if in matric
- Certified copy of your matric certificate, if completed
- Certified copy of your latest tertiary academic record on official institution letterhead, if studying
- Proof of academic achievements or merit certificates, if applicable
- Certified copies of parent or guardian ID documents
- Proof of household income such as payslips, affidavit, grant proof, or pension statement
- Proof of residential address, such as a municipal bill or tribal authority letter
- Proof of university or college acceptance letter, if available
- A written motivational letter supporting your application
All attached documents must be certified copies.

- 4Hand deliver the application package to the municipal offices in your local area before 13:30 on the closing date.
Late submissions or incomplete documentation will lead to disqualification.
