About this bursary

The Old Mutual Actuarial Bursary funds full-time undergraduate studies towards an actuarial degree at selected South African universities. The scholarship pays for tuition, university accommodation, meal allowances, prescribed textbooks, and return flights for students studying away from home.

Old Mutual provides this funding to support strong mathematical talent and develop future industry leaders. High academic achievers receive additional performance incentives throughout their studies.

Funding comes with a work-back commitment. Upon completion, graduates enter an in-house rotational scheme, receive mentoring from experienced actuaries, and gain guaranteed employment at the company.

Obligation

Graduates must work for Old Mutual for a period equal to the duration of funding provided.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • Applicants must hold South African citizenship.
  • You must be currently in Grade 12 or have completed matric.
  • Candidates must hold or be applying for an undergraduate Actuarial Science degree at UCT, Stellenbosch, UP, Wits, UFS, or NWU.
  • Matric academic results must include at least 80% for Pure Mathematics and 70% or higher for all other subjects.
  • English requirements are a minimum of 60% for Home Language or 70% for First Additional Language.
  • Applicants must be committed to qualifying as an actuary and working for Old Mutual post-graduation.
  • Preference goes to candidates from designated, previously disadvantaged backgrounds and applicants living with disabilities.

You do not qualify if

  • Students taking Technical Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy are not eligible.
  • Non-South African citizens cannot apply.
  • Students pursuing qualifications outside the approved list of universities will not be considered.

  • Certified copy of South African ID document
  • Latest Grade 12 results if currently in matric
  • Official matric certificate if completed school
  • Proof of university acceptance or conditional offer letter
  • Complete academic transcript if currently studying at university
  • Completed Bursary Motivation Form including the gamified assessment
  • National Benchmark Test (NBT) results if available
  • One-page Curriculum Vitae (CV)

All copies of documents must be clear and properly certified.

How you are selected

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by 31 July 2026 to complete online psychometric tests.

Candidates who clear the assessments will be invited to attend a selection day for formal interviews.

Successful applicants receive provisional bursary offers, which become final once matric results and university registration are confirmed.
