About this bursary

The Royal Bafokeng Institute (RBI) offers student loan assistance for tertiary education for the 2027 academic year. Founded under the Royal Bafokeng Nation, the institute supports educational development across 29 local villages in the North West province.

This student loan scheme targets bona fide residents of the Royal Bafokeng area who intend to pursue undergraduate qualifications at public accredited institutions in Gauteng or the North West.

Applicants must apply for NSFAS funding and hold an Admission Point Score (APS) of 30 or higher, excluding Life Orientation. Completed application forms and required paperwork must be hand-delivered to the RBI campus in Phokeng.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • You must be a verified bona fide resident of Royal Bafokeng.
  • You must intend to study towards an undergraduate degree in one of the specified fields.
  • You must hold provisional or firm acceptance at a public accredited university in North West or Gauteng.
  • You must demonstrate financial need based on your total household income.
  • You must achieve an APS score of at least 30, excluding Life Orientation.
  • You must submit an application for NSFAS funding.

You do not qualify if

  • Non-South African citizens are ineligible.
  • Applicants who do not reside within the Royal Bafokeng community will not be considered.
  • Studies at private institutions or universities outside North West and Gauteng are not funded.
  • Qualifications in BSc Medical Science or Acupuncture are excluded.

Documents you need to submit

  • Certified copy of your South African ID document (not older than 3 months)
  • Certified copy of Grade 11 final results and latest Matric results if currently in Grade 12
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate if completed
  • Certified copy of tertiary academic record if currently studying
  • Proof of household income (payslip if employed or affidavit if unemployed)
  • Certified copies of parents or guardians ID documents (not older than 3 months)
  • Proof of NSFAS application submission
  • Proof of university acceptance letter
  • Recommendation letter from your Kgosana

Ensure certified documents are not older than three months at the time of submission.

Applications received after the closing date will be disqualified.
