About this bursary

The SAICE Patrons Engineering Bursary Scheme (SPEBS) is managed by the South African Institution of Civil Engineering. Established in 1992, the scheme gives financial backing to high-achieving Civil Engineering students who need funding to complete their qualifications.

This bursary target students who have already passed their initial semester of tertiary study. Funding is allocated every semester based on available funds and academic progress. Payments go straight to the university or university of technology on the student's behalf.

Grants are capped at R7 000 per semester per applicant. Recipients can reapply or receive continued funding for subsequent semesters provided they maintain strong academic results.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • You must hold South African citizenship.
  • You must have completed matric.
  • You must be enrolled in a Civil Engineering degree or National Diploma at a recognized South African tertiary institution.
  • Degree students must have passed all first-semester subjects and be entering their second, third, or fourth year.
  • National Diploma students must have completed their S1 examinations and be entering S2, S3, or S4.
  • You need a strong academic record with zero failed subjects.
  • You must demonstrate financial need.

You do not qualify if

  • First-year students who have not yet passed their first semester exams.
  • Students pursuing qualifications outside of Civil Engineering.
  • Non-South African citizens.
  • Students studying at unaccredited institutions.

Documents you need to submit

  • Certified copy of your South African ID document
  • Certified copy of your complete tertiary academic record
  • Certified copy of proof of tertiary registration (required upon selection)

How you are selected
