About this bursary
The Sappi Bursary offers full or partial financial aid to South African students pursuing undergraduate degrees in engineering or forestry. Sappi is a multinational producer of wood fibre, pulp, and paper products headquartered in Johannesburg. Funding helps cover essential study costs including tuition, books, residence, and living expenses.
The programme aims to build technical expertise for the pulp and paper industry. It targets motivated school leavers and current university students who display strong academic potential in science and mathematics.
Bursars are required to complete paid vacation work during the July and December university holidays each year. Completing this work allows graduates to transition directly into the Sappi Engineer-in-Training graduate programme. Applicants who live close to Sappi operational facilities receive priority during selection.
Obligation
Recipients must attend mandatory vacation work each July and December, with opportunities to join the Sappi Engineer-in-Training graduate scheme after graduating.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- You must be a South African citizen aged between 17 and 25 years.
- You must currently be in Matric or have already completed Grade 12.
- You must plan to study full-time towards an eligible qualification at an accredited South African university in 2027.
- You must have achieved a minimum of 70% in pure Mathematics.
- You must have achieved a minimum of 70% in Physical Science.
- You must have achieved a minimum of 60% in English.
- Applicants residing near main Sappi operating centers receive preference.
You do not qualify if
- Applicants taking Mathematical Literacy instead of pure Mathematics.
- Students older than 25 years or younger than 17 years.
- Non-South African citizens.
- Students studying part-time or attending non-accredited tertiary institutions.

- Certified copy of Matric certificate (if completed Grade 12)
- Certified copy of your complete official tertiary academic transcript (if currently at university)
