About this bursary

The Thungela Bursary Programme offers financial support to undergraduate students studying targeted technical degrees in South Africa. Thungela Resources is a top thermal coal exporter created from the demerger of Anglo American's thermal coal division. The scheme is administered through Career Wise.

This bursary aims to build technical talent within the local mining industry. Funding is restricted to Employment Equity applicants who demonstrate clear financial need alongside strong academic potential in engineering or geology.

Recipients gain support while completing their studies and must fulfill practical training modules connected to their academic qualifications during university vacation periods.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • Applicants must hold South African citizenship.
  • Candidates must fall under Employment Equity criteria.
  • You must be enrolled or planning to study towards one of the approved degree courses.
  • Funding is open to students entering their first, second, or third year of study.
  • Studies must take place at a recognized and fully accredited South African university.
  • You must show exceptional academic results and prove genuine financial need.
  • Applicants must require practical work experience as part of their academic coursework.

You do not qualify if

  • Postgraduate students and fourth-year students are not eligible.
  • Non-South African citizens will not be considered.
  • Applicants enrolled at private higher education institutions do not qualify.

  • Certified copy of your National Senior Certificate or Matric results
  • Certified copy of your complete university transcript if already enrolled
  • Certified proof of household income such as payslips, SASSA grant letters, or an unemployment affidavit
