About this bursary

The SAICA Thuthuka Bursary Fund supports South African students who want to become Chartered Accountants. Managed by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, the scheme covers full tuition fees, campus accommodation, meals, and textbook allowances for approved undergraduate qualifications.

The fund targets black African and coloured students from low-income families. It aims to increase diversity within the accounting profession by helping academically capable students overcome financial obstacles to tertiary education.

Bursary recipients receive structured academic support, including extra tutorials, study skills training, mentoring, and emotional wellness assistance. Selected candidates must sign a contract with the Thuthuka Education and Upliftment Fund and NSFAS.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • You must identify as black African or coloured.
  • You must come from a disadvantaged background with a maximum combined family income of R350 000 per year.
  • You must currently be in matric or have passed matric within the last two years.
  • You must have obtained at least 60% (Level 5) in pure Mathematics for Grade 11. Technical Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy are not accepted.
  • You must be studying or planning to study an eligible CA-stream qualification at a participating university in 2027.
  • You must write or plan to write the National Benchmark Tests (NBT) before the bursary closing date.

You do not qualify if

  • Applicants with a combined family income over R350 000 per year.
  • Students taking Mathematical Literacy or Technical Mathematics.
  • Non-South African citizens.
  • Students applying to non-participating institutions or private colleges.

Documents you need to submit

  • Certified copy of your South African ID document
  • Certified copy of final Grade 11 results
  • Certified copy of latest matric results or final matric certificate
  • Proof of university provisional acceptance or registration on official letterhead
  • Full academic transcript on university letterhead if currently studying
  • Certified copies of parents or guardians ID documents
  • Proof of household income such as payslips or an unemployment affidavit
  • Certified copies of ID documents or birth certificates for household dependants
  • Completed and signed Thuthuka Consent Form

Certified copies must be clear and complete.

How to apply

    Apply for admission to an eligible CA-track accounting programme at a participating university.

    Register for and write the National Benchmark Tests (NBT) before the bursary closing date.

    Download and complete the official Thuthuka Consent Form.

    Gather clear certified copies of all required personal and household financial documents.
  5. 5
    Complete and submit the online application form on the Thuthuka portal before 31 August 2026.

How you are selected

Candidates are selected based on academic results, financial eligibility verified through the NSFAS means test, and NBT performance.

Bursary awards are reviewed annually and renewed at the discretion of the fund.
