About this bursary
The Tiso Foundation Bursary offers financial funding and academic development to South African youth studying towards any undergraduate qualification. Established in 2001 as a Public Benefit Organization, the foundation supports dozens of students each year across public South African higher education institutions.
This programme aims to remove financial barriers for academically capable students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Beyond paying for studies, the foundation helps recipients build essential life skills and provides career networking opportunities with corporate partners upon graduation.
Applicants must show strong academic dedication and a willingness to participate in community upliftment projects. Selection focuses on both academic performance and demonstrated financial need.

Who can apply
You qualify if
- You must be a South African citizen between 18 and 34 years old.
- You must come from a previously disadvantaged background, defined as Black, Coloured, or Indian.
- You need a minimum average of 70% in Matric if currently in Grade 12 or already completed high school.
- If you are currently studying at tertiary level, you need a minimum academic average of 65%.
- You must be enrolled or intending to register full-time for an undergraduate degree or diploma at an accredited South African university or university of technology.
- You must be unemployed, demonstrate financial need, and provide contactable references.
You do not qualify if
- Non-South African citizens.
- Applicants older than 34 or younger than 18.
- Students intending to study at private higher education institutions.
- Postgraduate applicants or part-time students.
Documents you need to submit
- Certified copy of your South African ID document
- Certified copy of your latest Grade 12 results if currently in Matric
- Certified copy of your Matric certificate if you have completed school
- Certified copy of your latest academic transcript if already at tertiary level
- Official proof of registration, acceptance, or provisional acceptance on university letterhead
- Proof of household income such as recent payslips, grant documentation, pension slips, or unemployment affidavits for parents or guardians
- Death certificates for deceased parents or guardians where applicable
