About this bursary

The Waitrose Foundation Southern Africa Bursary helps farm workers and their dependents access higher education. The scheme funds undergraduate qualifications at public universities and TVET colleges in Southern Africa.

This initiative targets permanent agricultural workers and their children who fall within minimum wage brackets. It aims to uplift local farming communities by expanding tertiary education opportunities across the Waitrose supply network.

Applicants must work for, or be dependent on an employee of, a recognised Waitrose fresh produce supplier. Studies may be taken at approved institutions in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.

Who can apply

You qualify if

  • You must be a permanent employee of a grower in the Waitrose supply chain, or a child or legal dependent of one.
  • Your household income must fall within the minimum wage bracket.
  • You must plan to study or currently be enrolled in an undergraduate degree or diploma.
  • Your qualification must belong to one of the approved fields of study.
  • You must hold provisional or confirmed admission at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.

You do not qualify if

  • Applicants without family employment ties to a Waitrose supply chain grower.
  • Students pursuing postgraduate qualifications.
  • Applicants studying at unaccredited institutions.

  • Proof of acceptance or provisional acceptance from your university or TVET college
  • Proof of employment within the Waitrose supply chain
