Postbank has shifted the language on its Gold Card migration from "please switch" to "you will lose access if you do not". From 1 October 2026, un-swapped Gold Cards will be blocked from ATM withdrawals and merchant POS on a rolling basis, and on 31 December 2026 they will be permanently deactivated. This is the final enforcement phase of the Postbank Black Card migration that began in 2023, and per a SARB Payment System Department directive issued on 21 July, no further deadline extensions will be considered.

If you are still on a Gold Card, or you care for someone who is (particularly an Older Person's Grant or Disability Grant beneficiary), the next eight weeks matter. Below is the enforcement schedule, the provincial backlogs, and the exact process to swap.

The Q3 2026 Enforcement Timeline

DateActionWhat it means for you
1 Aug 2026Final SMS wave to un-swapped card holdersTwo reminder SMS per week to the number on file
1 Oct 2026Soft blocks beginATM withdrawals fail on the 3rd attempt; POS still works
1 Nov 2026Retail POS blocksGold Cards refused at Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave
1 Dec 2026Grant deposits held for reviewGrant still arrives in your Postbank account but requires manual release
31 Dec 2026Full deactivationGold Cards permanently blocked; new card needed to access money

Nothing happens to your grant money

The enforcement blocks the card, not the Postbank account. Your grant continues to deposit on the usual date; you simply lose the ability to draw it until you swap. Check status via the SASSA status check or your SMS payment confirmation as usual.

Where the Remaining Backlog Sits

Postbank's mid-July operational report showed the un-swapped population has dropped from ~800,000 in March 2026 to roughly 310,000 today. The reduction was fastest in Gauteng and Western Cape, where mobile swap trucks scaled to 30+ sites per province. Rural KZN, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo remain behind.

ProvinceUn-swapped (approx.)Swap sites activeDaily throughput
Eastern Cape85,00062~1,800/day
KwaZulu-Natal72,00048~1,400/day
Limpopo58,00039~1,100/day
North West28,00021~700/day
Mpumalanga26,00019~650/day
Free State18,00016~500/day
Northern Cape12,00011~350/day
Gauteng8,00034~2,100/day
Western Cape3,00022~1,300/day

At the current national rate of roughly 9,900 swaps per day, the remaining 310,000 clears in about 31 working days if nothing goes wrong. That leaves a comfortable margin before 31 December, but only if daily throughput holds. Postbank has warned that November traffic spikes historically drop throughput by 25 percent.

How to Swap in 10 Minutes

The 4-step process

  • Step 1: Find a nearby swap site. Dial *120*355# on any phone (free), or call 0800 53 54 55.
  • Step 2: Bring your green ID book or smart ID card. No other document needed.
  • Step 3: A Postbank official verifies you and prints the Black Card on the spot. There is no fee.
  • Step 4: The Black Card is live immediately. Draw cash at any ATM or pay at any merchant on the Visa/Mastercard network.

Swap sites operate inside Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and USave stores. Best times to visit are early morning (07:30 to 09:00) on non-payment days. Wednesdays and Thursdays are quietest; the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of each month are the busiest.

Elderly or mobility-limited?

Postbank runs home visits for verified Older Person's Grant and Disability Grant beneficiaries. Request one via 0800 53 54 55 with the ID number of the beneficiary. Visits are booked 5 to 14 days out; do not leave it until December.

The Scam Wave Now in Circulation

Every enforcement deadline in the SASSA calendar produces a scam wave. The current cycle is running three variants:

What to watch for

  • Door-to-door "card collectors": Fake agents offering to take your Gold Card and return a new one. Postbank never sends unsolicited home agents. Refuse and report to 0800 53 54 55.
  • WhatsApp fee scams: Messages asking for R50 to "fast-track your card swap". The swap is 100 percent free; anyone asking for money is running a fraud.
  • SMS phishing: Messages with links like postbank-verify.co.za asking for your PIN or ID. Never click. Only official channel is postbank.co.za.

Report fraud

SASSA fraud hotline: 0800 60 10 11. Postbank card fraud: 0800 53 54 55. Both are toll-free from any SA network.

What Happens If You Miss 31 December?

If you have not swapped by 31 December 2026, your Gold Card stops working. Your Postbank account remains open and your grant continues to deposit. To restore access, you must still complete the same swap process; the delay is inconvenient but not permanent. Postbank has committed to keeping swap sites operational through Q1 2027 for late catch-ups, but with lower daily throughput and longer queues.

For beneficiaries who prefer to switch away from Postbank entirely, you may nominate a bank account in your own name via the SRD portal (for SRD) or a SASSA local office (for permanent grants). Details in our banking details update guide. Note that the Account Verification System runs the same checks as any other bank change; see the bank verification failed guide if AVS trips.
