If you receive a SASSA grant through a Postbank account and still hold the old gold-coloured SASSA card, your ability to withdraw money at ATMs and retailers is at risk. The card that millions of South Africans have used for years is being phased out, and the transition has been anything but smooth. Here is the full story, what it means for you, and exactly what to do.
Why the Gold Card Had to Go
In 2021, the cryptographic security key used to issue SASSA Gold Cards was compromised. This meant the encryption protecting card transactions was no longer safe. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) directed Postbank to replace every Gold Card with a new card carrying an updated bank identification number and improved security features. The replacement card is the Postbank Black Card, a standard debit card that works at all ATMs and point-of-sale terminals nationwide.
This is not a SASSA decision. SASSA does not issue cards. Social grants are paid into bank accounts, and banks are responsible for issuing the cards used to access those accounts. Postbank, as the state-owned bank handling most grant payments, is the entity responsible for the switch.
What Went Wrong: The February 2025 Deadline
Postbank originally set 28 February 2025 as the deadline for all Gold Cards to stop working. The rollout began in September 2024 with pilots in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Free State. But by the deadline, only 1.3 million of the approximately 2.9 million affected beneficiaries had switched. The remaining 1.6 million were left scrambling.
Black Sash: "Fear and Uncertainty"
- Replacement sites listed on the USSD platform did not exist or retailers were unaware Postbank was supposed to be operating there
- Many beneficiaries who switched early still did not receive their grants or received partial payments
- Network outages on grant pay days forced Postbank to turn away clients
- Post office closures removed fallback withdrawal points for over 1 million beneficiaries
- Elderly and disabled beneficiaries faced transport costs and long queues at distant replacement sites
The deadline was extended three times: first to 20 March 2025, then to 30 April, then to 31 May. By September 2025, the SARB intervened directly, gazetting a 15-month extension to allow Postbank until 31 December 2026 to complete the replacement of all remaining cards, including replacing the current Black Cards with updated versions carrying compliant bank identification numbers.

How to Switch: Step by Step
5 Steps to Get Your Postbank Black Card
- Step 1: Find your nearest replacement site. Dial *120*355# and select your province, or call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.
- Step 2: Take your valid SA ID document (or temporary ID) to the site. No other documents needed.
- Step 3: A Postbank official will verify your identity and issue the new Black Card on the spot. It is free of charge.
- Step 4: The new card works immediately. No waiting period. Use it at any ATM, retailer POS, or pay point.
- Step 5: Your grant continues to be paid into the same Postbank account. Only the card changes, not the account.
Replacement sites are located at Shoprite, Checkers, USave, Boxer, and (in Gauteng) Pick n Pay stores. Postbank has over 300 sites nationwide. If you are bedridden or incapacitated, Postbank has committed to arranging home visits, though availability varies by province.

Scam Warnings
Protect Yourself During the Switch
- Postbank will never ask for your PIN, OTP, or banking password during the card swap
- The replacement is completely free. If anyone asks you to pay, it is a scam
- Do not give your Gold Card to anyone. Destroy it yourself after receiving the Black Card
- Ignore social media posts claiming you will "lose your grant" if you do not switch immediately. Your grant is paid into your account, not onto the card
- Only use official Postbank channels: 0800 53 54 55 or *120*355#
Your Grant Is Safe
The card replacement does not affect your grant registration, your grant amount, or your payment dates. Your money continues to be deposited into your Postbank account on the same schedule. The only thing that changes is the physical card you use to access the money. If your Gold Card stops working before you have switched, you can still collect your grant at a Post Office branch (with your ID) or through a retailer using cardless payment methods.
