South Africa's SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) portal has been unreachable since Friday, 28 August 2026. Visitors to srd.sassa.gov.za are not seeing the usual application form or status-check page. They are seeing a plain white page with two words: It works!

The current view at srd.sassa.gov.za: a default web-server test page, not the SRD portal.

That "It works!" page is not a message from SASSA. It is the default landing page an Apache web server ships with when nothing else has been configured to serve. Seeing it live on a production government domain is a strong signal that the SRD web application has been taken down, most likely for planned maintenance or an unplanned emergency rollback, and no maintenance page has been put in its place.

What Has Actually Happened

SASSA has not issued a public statement at time of writing. What we can say with confidence from the outside is limited but useful:

What the outside signals tell us

  • The domain srd.sassa.gov.za still resolves, so DNS is fine and the server is reachable.
  • The server is responding with a default Apache test page, so the web-server process is running but the SRD application is not deployed on it right now.
  • The outage began on Friday, 28 August 2026 and has continued through the weekend into Sunday, 30 August.
  • Other SASSA services (main site, WhatsApp, USSD, GovChat) are unaffected. This is specific to the SRD sub-domain.

The most likely explanations are a scheduled weekend maintenance window that has overrun, a failed deployment that has been rolled back to a bare server, or a database migration between environments. In every case, the fix is on SASSA's side and there is nothing an applicant needs to do to their own device or account.

Your SRD application is safe

A public web-front outage does not touch the grant database. Approvals, pay dates, and existing statuses are stored server-side and continue to process on their normal schedule. When the portal returns, your status will be exactly what it was before Friday.

What This Means for Applicants

Depending on why you were going to the portal this weekend, the impact ranges from mild to inconvenient:

What You Were Doing Impact What To Do
Checking August statusPortal blockedUse WhatsApp, USSD, GovChat, or the grantZA Status Check
New SRD applicationCannot submit right nowWait for the portal to return. There is no early-close penalty this month.
Appealing a declined monthAppeal form unavailableThe 30-day appeal window is paused while the portal is down. See our appeal guide.
Updating banking detailsBlockedWait. Do not resubmit through unofficial channels.
Checking pay dateNo portal date visiblePay dates are still on their normal SRD payment schedule.

Scam warning: the outage will be exploited

Every time the SRD portal goes down, fake "SRD fixer" WhatsApp groups and Facebook posts appear offering to check your status, apply on your behalf, or restore access for a small fee. They are phishing for your ID number and banking details. The only official SASSA WhatsApp line is 082 046 8553. Anything else is a scam.

How to Check Your SRD Status While the Portal Is Down

The SASSA web portal is only one of several ways to check an SRD application. All of the alternatives below read from the same grant database and continue to work while srd.sassa.gov.za is offline:

1. grantZA SRD Status Check. Our own status-check tool is currently running on a maintenance banner because it also depends on SASSA's public front-end. Bookmark it and it will resume the moment the portal returns.

2. SASSA WhatsApp (082 046 8553). Save the number, send "Hi", then reply with "status". WhatsApp queries run on a separate service and are the most reliable channel during a web outage.

3. USSD *134*7737#. Dial from the phone registered with SASSA. This runs over the cellular signalling network, not the internet, and is not affected by web outages.

4. GovChat. Use the GovChat app or WhatsApp 060 012 3456. Select "SASSA" then "SRD Status" and enter your ID number.

5. SASSA toll-free helpline: 0800 60 10 11. Long queues during outages, but agents can look up your status manually.

What we recommend right now

Try WhatsApp first, USSD second. Both are free, both are official, and both continue to work while the web portal is offline. Save both numbers to your phone so you never have to search for them again.

When Will the Portal Come Back?

SASSA has not published a target time. Historically, similar outages have been resolved inside 48 hours once engineers are back at work on Monday morning. Given that the outage has already stretched from Friday to Sunday, a realistic expectation is that the SRD portal is restored during business hours on Monday, 31 August 2026. If it is not, expect a formal press statement from SASSA and possibly a temporary maintenance page replacing the "It works!" screen.

We are monitoring the domain in the background and will update this article once the portal is live again or once SASSA issues an official statement.

Check your SRD status without the SASSA site

Skip the outage entirely and use the grantZA SRD Status Check the moment SASSA's back-end reopens. It reads from the same database and takes under 30 seconds.
