South Africa's SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) portal was unreachable for six days from Friday 28 August 2026 through the morning of Wednesday 3 September 2026. Visitors to srd.sassa.gov.za did not see the usual application form or status-check page. They saw a plain white page with two words: It works!

As of 21 September 2026, the portal is back to normal, but the outage record matters because it changed how many applicants think about the alternative channels (WhatsApp, GovChat, the 0800 line). The WhatsApp channel is the correct primary fallback going forward. The USSD line *134*7737# is currently broken: on every payment cycle we test it, it accepts input but returns no live status. Treat it as unavailable regardless of what older SASSA leaflets still print. The article below is retained for anyone tracing what happened during the window itself, and the alternative-channel section has been updated to reflect what actually works now.

The current view at srd.sassa.gov.za: a default web-server test page, not the SRD portal.

That "It works!" page is not a message from SASSA. It is the default landing page an Apache web server ships with when nothing else has been configured to serve. Seeing it live on a production government domain is a strong signal that the SRD web application has been taken down, most likely for planned maintenance or an unplanned emergency rollback, and no maintenance page has been put in its place.

What Has Actually Happened

SASSA has not issued a public statement at time of writing. What we can say with confidence from the outside is limited but useful:

What the outside signals tell us

  • The domain srd.sassa.gov.za still resolves, so DNS is fine and the server is reachable.
  • The server is responding with a default Apache test page, so the web-server process is running but the SRD application is not deployed on it right now.
  • The outage began on Friday, 28 August 2026 and has continued through the weekend into Sunday, 30 August.
  • Other SASSA services (main site, WhatsApp, USSD, GovChat) are unaffected. This is specific to the SRD sub-domain.

The most likely explanations are a scheduled weekend maintenance window that has overrun, a failed deployment that has been rolled back to a bare server, or a database migration between environments. In every case, the fix is on SASSA's side and there is nothing an applicant needs to do to their own device or account.

Your SRD application is safe

A public web-front outage does not touch the grant database. Approvals, pay dates, and existing statuses are stored server-side and continue to process on their normal schedule. When the portal returns, your status will be exactly what it was before Friday.

What This Means for Applicants

Two real files from inside the outage window that show the shape of it:

An applicant we tracked on Saturday 29 August 2026 needed to check whether his R370 August payment had cleared before he committed the funds to an EasyPay account payment. The srd.sassa.gov.za portal was on the "It works!" page. He was Approved and paid on time (his R370 landed in his Postbank account on 25 August as scheduled), but he could not confirm it through the portal until 3 September because his WhatsApp number on file was still an old MTN number he had ported. The payment itself was fine, the status check was not.

Second case, Tuesday 1 September 2026: a first-time SRD applicant needed to submit a fresh application that day because she had just turned 18 and wanted to catch the September cycle. The portal was still down. She submitted through the SASSA WhatsApp line on 082 601 0111 at 15:47, received the automated "Application received" reply at 15:49, and pulled a "Pending verification" status when the web portal came back on 3 September at approximately 08:20. The WhatsApp submission path preserved her application timestamp inside the August cycle.

Depending on why you were going to the portal that week, the impact ranged from mild to inconvenient:

Scam warning: the outage will be exploited

Every time the SRD portal goes down, fake "SRD fixer" WhatsApp groups and Facebook posts appear offering to check your status, apply on your behalf, or restore access for a small fee. They are phishing for your ID number and banking details. The only official SASSA WhatsApp line is 082 601 0111. Anything else is a scam.

How to Check Your SRD Status While the Portal Is Down

The SASSA web portal is only one of several ways to check an SRD application. All of the official alternatives below read from the same grant database and continued to work during the outage:

1. SASSA WhatsApp (082 601 0111). Save the number, send "Hi", then reply with "status". WhatsApp queries run on a separate service and were the most reliable channel during the six-day web outage.

2. GovChat. Use the GovChat app or WhatsApp 060 012 3456. Select "SASSA" then "SRD Status" and enter your ID number.

3. SASSA toll-free helpline: 0800 60 10 11. Long queues during outages, but agents can look up your status manually. Call before 09:15 for the shortest wait.

4. USSD *134*7737#. Historically ran over the cellular signalling network rather than the internet. Currently broken: the string accepts input but does not return a live status on any cycle we have tested this year. Do not rely on this channel. It is listed here only because it still appears on older SASSA leaflets.

Once the portal is live, the grantZA SRD Status Check is available as a convenience wrapper that pulls from the same public SASSA front-end. It is not a replacement for the official channels above; use it if you find the portal easier to read on mobile.

What we recommend right now

Try WhatsApp 082 601 0111 first. If it does not respond in ten minutes (rare), fall back to the 0800 60 10 11 line. The 0800 line answers within about six minutes if you call before 09:15; after 10:00 the wait stretches past twenty. Save the WhatsApp number to your phone so you never have to search for it again.

When Will the Portal Come Back?

The portal came back on Wednesday 3 September 2026 at approximately 08:20 SAST, six days after it went down. There was no formal SASSA press statement acknowledging the outage; the domain simply started serving the SRD application again. SASSA's later monthly performance summary tabled at the Portfolio Committee on Social Development on 10 September 2026 confirmed the window without breaking down the root cause. Our reading, from the shape of the recovery, is that a database migration between environments overran and was rolled back rather than completed.

The official channels come first

The most reliable status check remains the SASSA WhatsApp line on 082 601 0111. If you prefer a browser view, srd.sassa.gov.za is the primary source. The grantZA SRD Status Check is an optional wrapper around the same public data, useful only for a cleaner mobile layout.
