SASSA Application Status Outcomes Explained
Every time you run a SASSA SRD status check, the portal returns a single-word verdict for the month you queried. That single word carries a lot of weight because it decides whether you get paid, whether you keep waiting, or whether you need to lodge an appeal. This guide breaks down every outcome you can see, what triggered it inside SASSA's monthly re-verification, and what you should do next.

Submitted (Waiting for Assessment)
A "Submitted" result means SASSA has received your application form and stored it in the SRD database, but the automated verification checks have not yet run for the month you are querying. Every new applicant sees "Submitted" for at least the first cycle, and existing beneficiaries see it briefly at the very start of each month before the batch verification runs.
What is happening in the background: SASSA queues your ID number for cross-checks against Home Affairs (to confirm you are alive and a citizen or permanent resident), SARS (income declared), UIF (are you receiving unemployment insurance), NSFAS (are you a funded student), the bank verification file (are there deposits crossing the R628 threshold), and the credit bureaus. Each of these queries returns independently, and the outcome flips to Pending or Approved once every check completes.
Typical time in this state: 3 to 14 days for a fresh application, 24 to 72 hours during the monthly re-run. If you have been "Submitted" for more than three weeks, the queue has likely stalled on one of the external verifications. Follow up through the status check tool or call 0800 60 10 11.
Pending / Assessed
"Pending" is the most misunderstood outcome. It does not mean rejected, and it does not mean approved. It means the automated system has finished running the initial checks but the result is being held back for a secondary review because one of the data feeds returned an ambiguous flag or the case requires a human decision.
Common reasons a status stays Pending:
- Home Affairs mismatch. Your ID number returns a slight discrepancy against the population register, for example a name spelling difference or a listed date-of-death that has since been corrected.
- Bank flag under R628. A deposit into your account is right on the edge of the R628 means-test threshold and needs a manual review of whether it is regular income or a once-off transfer.
- Backlog after portal outage. When the SRD portal has downtime (as happened repeatedly through 2024 and 2025), SASSA falls behind on batch processing and applications sit in Pending until the queue clears.
- Biometric hold. Newer applicants may need to complete facial recognition through the Moya app or an in-branch visit before payment can be released. See our identity verification guide.
Approved
"Approved" is the outcome you want. It confirms SASSA has verified your eligibility for the month you queried, the R370 has been earmarked for payout, and a payment date will be shown against your file. On the portal it displays as a green tag next to the month with a "Pay Date" field and a "Pay Method" field.
An Approved status does not guarantee the same result next month. SRD is re-verified monthly, and a Approved result in June can flip to Declined in July if a deposit was made into your bank account or your NSFAS or UIF status changed. Treat every Approved month as independent and check again on the first working day of the new month.
Month-to-Month Status
Long-term SRD beneficiaries occasionally see a "Month-to-Month" label instead of a single verdict. This is SASSA's way of saying you have been on the grant for more than 12 months, so the system now runs a rolling monthly assessment rather than a single yearly qualifying decision.
What this really means: your eligibility can change at any moment based on the data feeds. A Month-to-Month applicant with an Approved July can find August is Declined without any warning. This is by design under the R628 means test, which is checked afresh every month.
If you see Month-to-Month, treat the status check as a monthly ritual. The first working day of each month is when the verdict for the previous month settles and the next month enters processing.
Declined / Failed
"Declined" means at least one of the eligibility rules has been triggered against your record for the month in question. SASSA is legally required to give a reason next to the decline, and the reason drives whether your appeal stands a chance of succeeding.
The most common decline reasons in 2026 are:
Alternative Income Identified
The R628 threshold was breached in a bank account tied to your ID. This includes salary payments, once-off transfers from family, refund payments from retailers, and even the R370 SRD from a previous month.
Understand this code →Identity Verification Failed
Your ID and phone number do not match Home Affairs records, or biometric checks failed. See the identity verification guide.
Fix identity issues →Already Receiving a Grant
You are receiving another SASSA grant (Older Person's, Disability, Foster Care, or CSG as the primary caregiver), which disqualifies you from SRD.
Learn more →NSFAS Registered
Your ID is flagged as a currently funded student on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme system. NSFAS allowances count as income and disqualify you from SRD.
Learn more →UIF Registered
You have an active UIF claim on the Department of Labour system. UIF payouts are treated as income even when they cover backdated periods.
Learn more →Deceased Person
Home Affairs has your ID recorded as deceased. This is almost always an error and requires a Home Affairs correction letter before SASSA will reinstate your grant.
Fix identity issues →Referred / Under Review
Some applications get flagged as "Referred" or "Under Review", which is a middle-ground state between Pending and Declined. A human reviewer at SASSA has pulled the file out of the automated queue and is looking at it manually.
This usually happens when:
- Your bank account shows patterns the algorithm cannot classify, for example irregular but non-salary deposits.
- Your ID is linked to multiple other applications (a common false-positive for shared households).
- Fraud analytics have surfaced your file for a second look.
- You recently updated your banking or cellphone details and the change needs manual sign-off.
Referred cases take 14 to 30 days to resolve. There is no way to speed the queue up, but confirming your identity in person at a SASSA branch with your green barcoded ID can help move the file forward if it is stuck.
Reapplied
"Reapplied" appears when your original application lapsed or was cancelled and you have submitted a fresh application. It resets the clock on your monthly verification, and the new application follows the same Submitted → Pending → Approved/Declined lifecycle.
Important: Reapplied is not the same as a reconsideration. If you were declined and want to challenge that decision, you must lodge a formal reconsideration request through the appeal process. Reapplying instead of appealing means you lose the right to backdate the disputed month.
Canceled / Lapsed
A "Canceled" or "Lapsed" status means SASSA has closed your file. This happens automatically if:
- You did not receive a payment for three consecutive months.
- You did not respond to a verification SMS or portal prompt.
- You voluntarily cancelled the grant through the portal.
- Your application expired at the end of a funding cycle without renewal.
To restart, you need to submit a fresh application at srd.sassa.gov.za. Your new file will not backdate to cover the cancelled months.
No Record Found
The "No record found" message on the status portal means the combination of ID number and cellphone you entered does not match any application in the SRD database. Three things cause this:
- Typo. Check your 13-digit ID and 10-digit cellphone again. A single wrong digit returns No Record.
- Different phone. You applied with a different SIM. Try each cellphone number you have used in the past 24 months.
- Never applied. If you never lodged an SRD application, no record exists. Apply through the portal or WhatsApp bot 082 046 8553.
Decline Reason Codes Explained
| Reason shown on portal | What it actually means | Your best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Alternative Income Source Identified | Bank deposit of R628 or more in the tested month. | Provide a bank statement and affidavit showing the deposit was a once-off transfer, not income. Lodge reconsideration. |
| Means Income Source Identified | SARS has income data on file for you above the threshold. | If you have stopped working, request a SARS statement showing zero income for the disputed month. |
| UIF Registered | Active claim on the UIF system. | Get a UIF cancellation letter from your nearest Labour Centre and attach it to the reconsideration. |
| NSFAS Registered | You appear as a funded student on NSFAS. | NSFAS-funded students cannot receive SRD. If your funding has ended, get a NSFAS closure letter. |
| Existing SASSA Grant | You are the recipient of another SASSA grant. | You cannot receive SRD on top of another grant. This decline is correct. |
| Identity Verification Failed | ID number and phone do not match Home Affairs. | Follow the identity verification steps. |
| Debtor Flag | Credit bureau flagged an active debt-collection judgement. | This is not a valid decline reason under the SRD rules. Lodge a reconsideration and attach a credit report showing the age of the judgement. |
| Deceased | Home Affairs lists your ID as deceased. | Visit Home Affairs with your ID book to get a "proof of life" letter, then attach it to the reconsideration. |
| Fraud Listed | Your ID has been flagged by SASSA's internal fraud unit. | Visit a SASSA branch in person with your ID. Fraud flags cannot be cleared online. |
| Application Duplicate | Two applications with the same ID. | SASSA will resolve this automatically. Wait 30 days before appealing. |
What to Do Next: Outcome Playbook
If you are Approved
- Confirm the pay date shown against the month. Payments arrive between the 24th and the last day of the month.
- Check the pay channel is still current. Do not switch banks until after the payout has landed.
- Keep the confirmation SMS as proof if the payment goes missing.
- Set a reminder to run another status check on the first working day of the next month.
If you are Pending
- Wait 5 to 7 business days for automated re-run.
- Log in to the portal and confirm cellphone and bank details are correct.
- WhatsApp 082 046 8553 with your ID to request an update on the queue.
- If still Pending after 21 days, visit a SASSA branch with your ID book.
If you are Declined
- Read the decline reason carefully. Match it to the codes above.
- Gather supporting documents (bank statement, affidavit, UIF closure letter).
- Lodge a reconsideration within 30 days through our appeals guide.
- If reconsideration fails, escalate to the Independent Tribunal within 90 days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does "Assessed" mean the same as "Pending"?
Yes. SASSA uses both labels for the same intermediate state. Some months the portal shows "Pending" and other months it shows "Assessed" or "Being processed", but the meaning is identical: your file is with the verification engine and no final decision has been made yet.
Why did my status change from Approved to Declined for the same month?
A verification re-run has picked up new data since the first result was published, most often a bank deposit that pushed you over the R628 threshold. If you believe the new data is wrong, request reconsideration within 30 days and attach a bank statement covering the disputed period.
What if my status shows Approved but I never got paid?
Approved-but-unpaid usually means the pay channel is misconfigured. Confirm the bank account details on the portal match your actual account, then check that the account is in your own name (SASSA will not pay into a third-party account). If both are correct, follow up with your bank first, then SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
How often does the portal update the status?
Verification runs in batches, typically overnight on weekdays. Do not expect a Pending to change in real time. Check once per day.
Can I check my status without a smartphone?
Yes. Dial *134*7737# (SRD-only USSD) or *120*69277# from any feature phone. Both are free. You can also WhatsApp 082 046 8553 or call the toll-free line 0800 60 10 11.
