How to Apply for the SASSA SRD R370 Grant

A fresh SASSA Social Relief of Distress application takes about fifteen minutes online, but only if you have your ID, cellphone, and banking details in one place before you start. This guide walks through the eligibility gate, the four official application channels, the exact fields the portal asks for, and what to do in the first month after you submit so you actually get to an Approved status.

Quick Eligibility Check

Before spending fifteen minutes on the form, run yourself through this quick check. If you fail any single item you will be declined at the first monthly re-verification, so save yourself the wait.

For the full eligibility rules and the R628 means-test detail, see our SRD eligibility guide.

What You Need Before You Start

Identity

Your 13-digit SA ID number. Refugees and asylum seekers use the file reference on their Section 22 or Section 24 permit.

Cellphone

A South African cellphone number RICA'd in your own name. This becomes your permanent login for status checks and OTP prompts.

Pay channel

A bank account in your own name (any SA bank works), OR your CashSend / eWallet cellphone number, OR your preferred retailer for cash collection.

Consent

You will be asked to consent to SASSA verifying your details with Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, the credit bureaus, and the banks. Tick "Yes" or the application cannot be submitted.

Four Ways to Apply

Recommended

SRD Portal (Web)

Open srd.sassa.gov.za on any browser. Free to use, works on any device with data or Wi-Fi. This is the primary channel and the only one that exposes the full form in one view.

No data

WhatsApp Bot

Save 082 046 8553, send SRD and follow the guided prompts. Same backend as the portal, useful when the web portal is under load or you prefer chat.

Feature phone

USSD

Dial *134*7737# from any SA cellphone. No smartphone or data required. Menu is bare but works even on the cheapest handsets and is free on all networks.

In person

SASSA Local Office

Walk in with your green ID book. A consultant enters the details for you and captures your biometric on the spot. Use this if the online channels have failed twice or you need in-person help.

All four channels feed the same database. You can apply on the portal today and then run your status check on WhatsApp tomorrow, and both will show the same file.

Portal Application Walkthrough

  1. Open srd.sassa.gov.za and tap "Apply for SRD Grant". You will land on a consent screen.
  2. Read the consent notice and tick "I agree". Without this the application cannot proceed.
  3. Enter your 13-digit SA ID number. Double-check every digit; a typo means your application will fail identity verification on the first monthly run.
  4. Enter the cellphone number RICA'd in your own name. An OTP is sent to this number; enter it within 90 seconds.
  5. Confirm your full names and date of birth as shown by Home Affairs. If any field is blank, type it in exactly as it appears on your ID.
  6. Answer the residency question (citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylum seeker) and upload a permit if you selected one of the last two.
  7. Answer the income and employment questions truthfully. Any income declaration above R628 immediately disqualifies the application; false answers are picked up during the bank sweep and lead to a fraud flag later.
  8. Choose your pay channel: Bank Account, CashSend, or Retail Collection. Enter the account or preferred retailer.
  9. Review the summary screen carefully, then tap Submit. You will receive a confirmation SMS with a reference number.
  10. Screenshot the reference number. You will need it if the file ever needs manual intervention.

Applying via WhatsApp

The WhatsApp bot walks you through the same fields in a guided chat.

  1. Save 082 046 8553 to your contacts as "SASSA SRD".
  2. Open the chat and send the word SRD.
  3. Reply "1" or "Apply" when the bot asks what you want to do.
  4. Type your 13-digit ID when prompted, then your cellphone number.
  5. Confirm the OTP by replying with the 6-digit code.
  6. Answer the income, employment, and residency prompts one message at a time.
  7. Choose your pay channel from the menu the bot presents.
  8. The bot returns your reference number in the final message.

Applying via USSD

USSD is a lifeline if you have a feature phone or run out of data.

  1. Dial *134*7737# on any cellphone.
  2. Choose "Apply" from the menu.
  3. Enter your 13-digit ID.
  4. Enter your cellphone number.
  5. Read the OTP that appears on the session; the number is confirmed automatically.
  6. Answer each yes-or-no eligibility prompt.
  7. Pick a pay channel and enter the required detail.
  8. Note the reference number displayed on the confirmation screen before the session times out.
USSD limitation: Some field lengths (like full account numbers) are capped by USSD screens. If you have a long account number or need to upload a permit, switch to the portal or a branch.

What Happens After You Submit

Days after submissionWhat is happeningWhat you should do
Day 0 to 3Application queued as "Submitted". Basic ID and cellphone checks run.Nothing. Wait for the batch verification.
Day 3 to 14Full verification stack runs: Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, banks, credit bureaus.Screenshot your reference number. Do not update any details in this window.
Day 14 to 25Status flips to Approved, Pending, or Declined for the current month.Run a status check. Read the outcome in our status outcomes guide.
Day 25 onwardsApproved applicants enter the payment queue.Confirm your pay channel is correct via the banking details guide.
Do not reapply if your first application is still Pending. A second submission creates a duplicate that both fail on the next re-verification. Give the first application a full 30 days before considering a new one.

Reapplying After a Lapsed File

SASSA closes SRD files when three consecutive payments are unclaimed or when you do not respond to a verification prompt. A lapsed file cannot be reopened; you have to submit a fresh application. The process is identical to the first-time flow, but there are three practical differences.

Full mechanics of file lapses and reinstatements are in our grants review process guide.

Common Application Mistakes

Using a family member's cellphone

The RICA check will flag the SIM as not linked to your ID. Rica a SIM in your own name first, then apply.

Ticking "employed" by accident

Some applicants confuse "informal work" with "employed". If you have no regular pay slip, you are not formally employed. Answer honestly, but read each option before ticking.

Applying with a joint bank account

SASSA cannot pay into a joint account. Use your personal account or CashSend or retail collection.

Submitting on a public Wi-Fi in a store

Session tokens can get intercepted. Apply from a private connection or from a friend's data hotspot. If you must use public Wi-Fi, do not save the browser tab on that device.

Paying an "agent" to apply for you

All four channels are free. Anyone charging you to apply is a scam. See our fraud protection notes.

Ignoring the confirmation SMS

Screenshot and save it. Without a reference number, follow-ups take three times as long.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the application form?

About 15 minutes on the portal for a first-time applicant with all documents ready. Reapplications are faster because most fields pre-populate from your last submission.

Can I apply from outside South Africa?

No. The SRD portal blocks non-SA IP addresses, and applications are only paid into SA bank accounts or retailers. You need to be inside the country when applying.

Do I need to apply every month?

No. Once approved, your file is re-verified automatically each month. See our grants review process guide.

Can I apply on behalf of someone else?

Only in exceptional cases (bedridden, mentally incapacitated) and with a signed power of attorney. Visit a SASSA branch with both IDs and the POA document.

What if I make a typo after submitting?

Log into the portal, choose "Update Existing Application", and fix the field. Do not resubmit; that creates a duplicate.

How soon after applying will I get paid?

First payment usually lands 4 to 8 weeks after submission, once verification is complete and you are picked up in the next monthly payment cycle. See the payment dates schedule.
