SASSA Banking Details Update: EFT, CashSend & Retail

Where your R370 lands each month is entirely your call, but the wrong choice can delay payment by weeks or expose you to bank fees that eat the grant. This guide compares every pay channel SASSA offers for SRD, shows the exact steps to switch between them, and explains the timing rules that stop your status check flipping back to Pending after a change.

EFT to a Bank Account

Own-name bank account

SASSA pays directly into your personal bank account overnight. The account must be in your own name; SASSA cannot pay into a joint or third-party account (this is a POPIA and Social Assistance Act requirement).

Requirements:

  • SA bank account in the name matching your SA ID.
  • Correct branch code (usually pre-filled by the portal).
  • Account must be active and not dormant.

Watch out for: Free digital accounts like Tyme Bank, Discovery Bank, Bank Zero, and Capitec Global One all work. Older Mzansi accounts have been phased out and may fail SASSA's verification.

CashSend and eWallets

CashSend push to phone

SASSA generates a one-time PIN (OTP) and sends it as an SMS to your registered cellphone. You go to a partner ATM, choose "CashSend / eWallet withdrawal", enter your cellphone and the OTP, and draw the R370 in cash.

Partner banks: ABSA CashSend, Standard Bank InstantMoney, FNB eWallet, Nedbank Send-iMali, Capitec Cash Send. All support drawing SASSA SRD payouts even if you do not bank there.

Fees: Free at the issuing bank's ATMs. Up to R6 at competitor ATMs. Retailer withdrawals (Shoprite, Pick n Pay) are usually free but may cap at R500 per transaction.

Postbank / SASSA Gold Card

SASSA gold card via Postbank

The SASSA gold card is issued by Postbank and works like a debit card. Payments deposit into your Postbank account overnight. You can withdraw at any Postbank branch, Post Office, or any bank ATM that accepts the Visa or Mastercard network.

Status in 2026: Postbank has been going through a migration since 2023 following the payment failures of that year. New SRD applicants are usually steered toward CashSend or their own bank account rather than a fresh gold card. Existing gold-card holders should keep using theirs unless it expires; see our gold card replacement guide.

Fees: Free at Postbank branches and Post Office ATMs. R7 to R10 elsewhere.

Retail Collection

Pick your named retailer

If you pick "Retail collection" as your pay channel, SASSA loads your R370 onto a virtual voucher tied to your ID. You collect at the till of the retailer you nominated on the portal.

Supported retailers: Boxer, Shoprite, Usave, Pick n Pay, Checkers. Woolworths and Spar are not in the SASSA network.

How to collect: Go to any till, hand your green ID book to the cashier, request "SASSA payout". The cashier verifies your ID against SASSA's system in real time and hands you R370 in cash. No card is needed.

Fees: Free at all supported retailers.

Downside: You must physically collect, which is a problem in remote or rural areas where the nearest supermarket is far away.

Best choice for most applicants in 2026: Your own bank account if you have one already, or CashSend if you do not. Retail collection is a fine backup if both fail.

How to Change the Details Safely

Method 1: SRD portal

  1. Open srd.sassa.gov.za in any browser.
  2. Log in with your ID and cellphone, confirm the OTP.
  3. Select "Update Existing Application" → "Change Banking Details".
  4. Choose your new pay channel: Bank Account, CashSend, Postbank, or Retail.
  5. Enter the details for the chosen channel. For bank accounts, the branch code is auto-populated from the account number.
  6. Submit and note the reference number.
  7. SASSA runs an Account Verification System (AVS) check with the bank overnight. This confirms the account is active and in your name.

Method 2: WhatsApp bot

The SASSA WhatsApp bot on 082 046 8553 supports banking updates through the "Update" menu. Follow the prompts the same way as the phone number update. WhatsApp is useful when the portal is overloaded during month-end verification.

Method 3: In-branch

Visit any SASSA local office with your original green ID book and, if changing to bank EFT, a proof-of-banking letter from your bank (free at any bank teller). A consultant enters the details for you, bypassing the AVS delay. Same-day processing in most cases.

Timing Rules That Protect Your R370

The single most important rule: Do not change your banking details in the 5 working days before your expected payment date. A late change resets the payment queue and pushes your R370 into the following month.

The safe timing window is:

What triggers a payment queue reset

Change typePayment queue impactCooling period
Same channel, different bank account (e.g. FNB to Capitec)Queue resets, one payment may land in old account first7 to 14 days
Different channel (e.g. Bank to CashSend)Full re-verification, biometric may be re-triggered14 to 30 days
Retail store change (e.g. Shoprite to Pick n Pay)Instant, no delayNone
Bank account details typo correctionAVS re-check3 to 5 days

Fraud Red Flags

Banking details fraud is the single most common SASSA scam. Here is what protects you.

Two-change rule: Three or more banking changes in a rolling 6-month period will automatically flag your file for enhanced fraud review, potentially suspending payments for 30 to 90 days. Change only when strictly needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my Mzansi account?

Legacy Mzansi accounts have been phased out. If your account still shows as active, SASSA verification may fail. Ask your bank to migrate you to a standard entry-level account (Capitec Global One, FNB Easy, ABSA Transact, or Standard Bank MyMo) which all work for SASSA payouts.

What if the account is not in my name (e.g. joint account with my husband)?

SASSA will not pay into an account not in the recipient's exclusive name. Open a personal account in your own name (free at Tyme Bank, Bank Zero, and Discovery Bank) or use CashSend / retail collection instead.

Can I have SASSA pay into my child's account?

No. The SRD is a personal grant tied to your ID and must be paid into your own name. Child Support Grant is separate and pays into the primary caregiver's account.

What happens if my account is closed after I selected it?

SASSA's AVS check will fail on the next run and your status will flip to Pending. You get an SMS asking for a new pay channel. Log in to the portal and update, then wait 7 days for reprocessing.

Can I split my R370 across two channels?

No. SASSA supports a single pay channel per applicant per month.

Do I need to visit a bank branch to open an account for SASSA?

No. Tyme Bank, Bank Zero, Discovery Bank, and FNB App accounts can all be opened entirely on your phone. Once the account has an account number and is FICA-verified, use it on the SASSA portal.
