SASSA Grants Review Process: Monthly Re-verification & Suspensions
Unlike the older grants that pay you until age or disability status changes, the SRD is a rolling grant re-tested every single month. Understanding the review cycle explains why an Approved June can flip to Declined in July, and why a suspension can appear without warning. This page walks through the automated eligibility loop, the periodic human reviews, the suspension triggers, and the exact steps to get a suspended grant reinstated.

Why Grants Get Reviewed at All
The Social Assistance Act (Act 13 of 2004) obliges SASSA to test eligibility on an ongoing basis rather than once at application. For the SRD this obligation is baked into the funding cycle: because the R370 is a temporary relief grant, National Treasury requires that only currently-eligible beneficiaries draw it, and eligibility is defined against the R628 means test plus the disqualifying conditions (UIF, NSFAS, other SASSA grants).
In practice this means SASSA re-runs the entire verification stack against every active applicant every month. There is no "grandfather" clause; a beneficiary who has been paid for 18 months in a row must still pass every check in month 19 to receive the next R370.
The Monthly Review Cycle
The SRD review runs on a predictable calendar. Once you understand the calendar, the mystery Pending statuses at the start of each month stop being mysterious.
Days 1 to 5
Previous month closes. Payment failures roll back to processing.
Days 6 to 15
Fresh data feeds pulled (Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, bank sweeps).
Days 15 to 20
Automated verification engine issues Approved / Pending / Declined for the new month.
Days 20 to 23
Manual review of Referred cases. Reconsiderations from previous month processed.
Days 24 to 31
Payments released in batches to bank, CashSend, Postbank, and retail channels.
Running a status check on the first working day of the new month usually returns "Submitted" or "Pending" because the automated engine has not yet issued a verdict for that month. This is normal. Check back on day 15 for the fresh result.
Periodic Eligibility Reviews
On top of the monthly cycle, SASSA runs deeper reviews at set intervals. These are more rigorous and can pull in data the monthly cycle misses.
| Review | Frequency | What it checks | Impact if you fail |
|---|---|---|---|
| SARS income sweep | Quarterly (Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec) | Declared income for the tax year to date. | Declined for the affected months; backpay may be reversed. |
| NSFAS reconciliation | Twice yearly (Feb, Aug) | Enrolment status at all TVET colleges and universities. | Declined from the month registration started. |
| UIF reconciliation | Quarterly | Active claims on the Department of Labour system. | Declined for the claim months. |
| Fraud analytics sweep | Monthly, deeper every quarter | Pattern matching across ID, phone, bank, and device fingerprints. | File flagged as "Under review", payments held for 30-90 days. |
| Biometric refresh | Random 5% sample per quarter | Facial recognition against Home Affairs photo. | Payments held until a Moya or in-branch scan is completed. |
| Life certificate | Annually (Older Person's, Disability, War Vet, Grant-in-Aid) | Physical proof of life at a SASSA branch or partner hospital. | Grant suspended if not completed by anniversary. |
What Triggers a Suspension
Suspension is different from a monthly decline. A decline is a "no" for one month; a suspension is a hold on the whole file until you take action. Common triggers include:
Fraud flag
Fraud analytics detected suspicious activity: multiple applications from one device, ID linked to a syndicate, or rapid banking changes.
Failed biometric
You were flagged for a biometric check and did not complete it within the deadline (usually 30 days).
Missed life certificate
Applies to other SASSA grants (not SRD). Older Person's, Disability, and War Vet beneficiaries must attend an annual life-verification appointment.
Uncollected payments
Three consecutive months of unclaimed payments (retail collection) or failed EFT auto-suspend the file.
Duplicate ID flag
Home Affairs or the SASSA system detects two active files under the same ID.
Deceased notification
DHA population register flips your ID to deceased status, whether correctly or erroneously.
Suspension vs Cancellation: The Difference
SASSA uses different language for what feels like the same thing. Get the terminology right so you request the correct fix.
| Term | Definition | Reversible? | How to fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Declined (monthly) | Single month rejected, file still active. | Yes via reconsideration | Reconsideration within 30 days |
| Suspended | Payments held pending action from you. | Yes, on completion | See "How to get reinstated" below. |
| Lapsed | File deactivated due to non-payment for 3+ months. | Partial, must reapply | Fresh application. Lost months not backdated. |
| Cancelled | File closed either voluntarily or by SASSA due to fraud. | No, unless overturned via ITSAA | Fresh application after appeal. |
How to Get a Suspended Grant Reinstated
Step 1: Find out why
SASSA does not always send an SMS explaining the suspension. Log in to the SRD portal, tap on the affected month, and read the note against the status. If nothing is shown, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask the agent to read the reason from your file.
Step 2: Fix the underlying issue
- Biometric miss: complete a Moya scan or visit a branch. See identity verification.
- Fraud flag: visit a SASSA branch with your ID and a SAPS case number if identity theft is suspected.
- Deceased flag: get a Home Affairs correction letter (see step-by-step).
- Duplicate file: visit a branch to consolidate. Bring your ID and the SASSA reference number of both files if you know them.
- Uncollected payments: collect the outstanding cash or fix the failed pay channel via banking details update.
Step 3: Confirm reinstatement
After the fix, wait 7 to 14 working days. Run a fresh status check. A reinstated file returns to "Approved" status if the underlying eligibility is intact. Payments resume from the next monthly run; backpay for suspended months is issued once the reinstatement is signed off by the branch manager or the appeals unit.
Reviews for Other SASSA Grants
The monthly loop is unique to the SRD. Other grants have gentler review cycles because they are tied to long-term life circumstances.
- Older Person's Grant: Annual life certificate at a SASSA office or approved partner hospital. Grant runs indefinitely until the beneficiary passes away, at which point Home Affairs notifies SASSA automatically.
- Disability Grant: Reviewed at the end of the medical certificate period (temporary grants are typically 6 to 12 months; permanent grants have no automatic re-review). See our disability assessment guide.
- Foster Child Grant: Reviewed at every Children's Court order renewal (usually every 2 years). See foster child grant details.
- Care Dependency Grant: Annual medical certificate confirming ongoing care need.
- Child Support Grant: No routine review, but SASSA can trigger a means test at any time if the primary caregiver's circumstances appear to change.
- Grant-in-Aid: Reviewed at the underlying grant's review anniversary.
How to Stay Compliant Month After Month
The single best way to protect your R370 is to keep your file boring for the verification engine. Nine practical habits:
- Do not update anything in the 5 working days before payment. No banking, no phone, no address.
- Keep bank deposits below R628 per month. Ask family to send smaller amounts across two months rather than one lump sum.
- Close old bank accounts you no longer use. Old accounts get swept and can push you over the threshold accidentally.
- Do not accept eWallet or SnapScan payments over R500 in your name. Ask senders to use a different recipient if the amount is large.
- Update your details as soon as they change, not weeks later. Reactive updates trigger fraud rules; proactive updates do not.
- Keep proof-of-address documents together. A ward councillor letter or utility bill is often requested.
- Print or screenshot each Approved outcome. If SASSA later disputes a paid month, you have evidence.
- Set a monthly reminder for the 15th. Check status; if Approved, plan collection; if Pending or Declined, act immediately.
- Never share your OTP or ID copy with anyone offering to "unlock" your grant. These are scams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SASSA notify me when my file is reviewed?
Only when the outcome changes. An unchanged Approved month usually comes with no notification; a status change (Approved to Declined, or a suspension) triggers an SMS to your registered cellphone.
Can I opt out of monthly reviews?
No. Every SRD applicant is subject to monthly re-verification. Opting out means opting out of the grant.
Why does my status flip from Approved to Declined and back?
Data feeds land at different times in the month. A bank sweep that arrives late can trigger a Declined that reverses when the affidavit or supporting document you submitted is processed. Wait 7 days after any status change before acting.
Do reviews stop during December or the festive period?
No. The automated engine runs all year. December payments follow the same calendar, though physical branch support is reduced between 24 December and 2 January.
Can I request an early review if my circumstances have changed for the better?
Yes. Log an update on the portal with the new details (e.g. new bank account, updated address). The next monthly cycle will pick up the change automatically. There is no separate "early review" request.
What if I disagree with a suspension decision?
You can lodge a reconsideration through the appeals process in the same way as a monthly decline. The 30-day clock starts from the suspension SMS or, if no SMS, from the day the suspension appeared on the portal.
