SASSA Status Check Not Working: Errors & Fixes

You type in your ID, tap Check, and nothing helpful comes back: a blank screen, a spinning loader that never resolves, a rude "System Offline" banner, or the classic "No Records Found" for a grant you know is active. Every one of these has a specific cause, and most of them are fixable in under five minutes without waiting on the SASSA call centre. This guide walks through every failure mode of the SRD status check and shows the exact fix for each.

Try These 5 Quick Fixes First

Roughly 8 in 10 status check problems clear after these five steps. Work through them in order before assuming your file is broken.

  1. Refresh the page and re-enter your ID. A partial page load is the single most common reason the check button does nothing.
  2. Wait 15 minutes and retry. The SRD portal throttles requests during month-end verification (roughly the 20th to 28th). A short wait usually resolves the queue.
  3. Switch device or network. If Wi-Fi is failing, try mobile data. If a laptop is failing, try your phone. Corporate and school networks sometimes block srd.sassa.gov.za.
  4. Clear browser cache and cookies for srd.sassa.gov.za, then load the page fresh.
  5. Try an alternative channel. WhatsApp on 082 046 8553, USSD *134*7737#, or the Moya App all query the same database and can succeed when the web portal fails.

Blank or Spinning Results

The check button does nothing

Cause: The page loaded before the JavaScript did, or a browser extension (usually an ad blocker or privacy tool) is blocking the SASSA API call.

Fix: Disable ad blockers for srd.sassa.gov.za, or open the site in an Incognito/Private window. If that works, whitelist the domain and reopen a normal tab.

Loader spins forever

Cause: Backend timeout. Common between 08:00 and 11:00 on weekdays, and worst on the 25th of the month when payment runs kick in.

Fix: Wait 30 minutes and retry. If it still fails, use the WhatsApp bot on 082 046 8553 which uses a lighter API path and rarely times out.

"System Offline" or Portal Down

SASSA occasionally posts a maintenance banner reading "Service temporarily unavailable" or "System Offline". This is usually planned maintenance, most often on Sunday nights between 22:00 and 04:00.

Confirm it is SASSA, not you: Check the SASSA @OfficialSASSA Twitter / X account, or try loading the site on mobile data. If it works on data but not Wi-Fi, the problem is your network.

"No Records Found" for Your ID

This is the most alarming error, but usually the least serious. It means SASSA's system cannot find an active application for the ID and cellphone combination you entered.

Common causes and fixes

Invalid Reference Number

Reference numbers are 12 digits, generated at the moment you apply and shown once on screen and once by SMS. They are case-sensitive if they contain letters, but the standard 2026 format is numeric only.

What triggers "invalid reference"

  1. You typed the number from memory instead of copying the SMS.
  2. You mixed up your ID number with your reference number in the portal fields.
  3. The reference belongs to a prior cycle; each new SRD cycle issues a fresh reference.
  4. You wrote down a number that included spaces or dashes; strip these before entering.
Lost your reference number? You do not need it to check your status. Log in with your ID and cellphone; the portal displays the current reference on the results page.

OTP Not Arriving on Your Phone

The one-time PIN is sent as a plain SMS to the cellphone on your SASSA file. It should arrive within 60 seconds.

Fixes in order

  1. Confirm you are not roaming. If you are outside South Africa, most SA cellphone networks disable OTP SMS as an anti-fraud measure.
  2. Check your SMS inbox is not full. Older handsets silently drop new SMS when the inbox is full. Delete 20 messages and request a fresh OTP.
  3. Ask your network to check the SMS gateway. Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Rain, and Telkom occasionally block bulk OTP traffic during load-shedding recovery windows. Toll-free numbers: Vodacom 111, MTN 173, Cell C 084 140.
  4. Turn the phone off for 30 seconds and on again. This forces a fresh registration with the network and often releases stuck OTPs.
  5. Request a new OTP. The portal limits you to 3 OTP requests per hour. If you exceed that, wait 60 minutes.

Cellphone Does Not Match

"Cellphone number does not match our records" means the number you typed is not the one linked to your SASSA file. This is the most frequent single cause of failed status checks in 2026.

Do not open a new application. Doing so risks two open files under one ID, which SASSA will resolve by declining both. Instead, update the phone on your existing file.

To update, follow the full walkthrough in our change phone number guide. If you no longer have access to the old number, the WhatsApp bot on 082 046 8553 supports a fallback verification using your ID, biometrics, and a security question. Failing that, walk into your nearest SASSA local office with your green ID book.

When to Give Up Online and Visit SASSA

If you have worked through every fix above and still get an error, visit a SASSA local office in person. Bring:

Skip the queue: Arrive at opening (07:30) on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Mondays are always the busiest and Fridays close early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the site work on my phone but not my laptop?

Corporate networks, public Wi-Fi, and university connections often block government IPs. Try mobile data on the laptop, or a personal hotspot from your phone.

The portal shows my status as Approved but no money arrived. What now?

Approved and Paid are different states. Approved just means SASSA agreed you qualify this month; Paid confirms the money left SASSA. Check the payment date in our payment dates guide. If Paid but no cash, the issue is with your pay channel; see the bank verification failed guide.

Is there a free SASSA helpline for status check problems?

Yes. Call 0800 60 10 11 toll-free from any SA landline or cellphone (Mon-Fri 07:00 to 20:00). Have your ID number ready.

Can I check my SRD status if I lost my phone entirely?

Not online, because OTP is required. Buy a new SIM in your own name, then use the WhatsApp bot on 082 046 8553 or visit a SASSA office with your green ID book to relink the new number to your file.

Why does the WhatsApp bot say "invalid ID number"?

The bot requires 13 digits with no spaces, and the ID must match Home Affairs' active records. If your ID was recently updated (name change, gender marker change), the WhatsApp bot may lag Home Affairs by 2 to 5 working days.

The Moya App shows Pending but srd.sassa.gov.za shows Declined. Which is right?

The website is the authoritative source. Moya, MyGov, and third-party check tools can lag by 12 to 24 hours. Always trust srd.sassa.gov.za when they disagree.
