SASSA SRD Monthly Reconfirmation Explained
The SRD R370 is not a fixed monthly income; it is a distress relief grant that must be earned back every single month. That is why your status check can show Approved in July, Pending on the 3rd of August, and Declined by the 10th, all without you doing anything wrong. This guide explains how monthly reconfirmation works, what triggers a re-run of the means test, and what to do the moment your status flips back to Pending so you do not lose that month's R370.

Why the SRD Is Re-Verified Every Month
The SRD sits on a legal basis different from the Older Person's or Disability grants. Where those are long-term entitlements once approved, the SRD was introduced in May 2020 under the Disaster Management Act as short-term poverty relief. Regulation 2 of the 2022 SRD directions requires SASSA to confirm every applicant is still in genuine distress before releasing each monthly payment.
Concretely this means SASSA re-runs the entire eligibility check every calendar month using the latest data from Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, and the banks. Approved does not carry over automatically.
The Monthly Reconfirmation Cycle
| Day of month | What SASSA does | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| 1st to 3rd | Bulk status reset to Pending for all active files | Do nothing; the reset is expected |
| 4th to 10th | Means test re-run against SARS, UIF, and bank inflow data | Check status once around day 10 |
| 11th to 17th | Approved / Declined outcomes populate the portal | Log in, note the outcome, act on any decline reason |
| 18th to 24th | Bank verification (AVS) runs for Approved files | Confirm bank details are current |
| 25th to end | Payment run releases the R370 for confirmed files | Collect via your chosen pay channel |
How the R628 Means Test Re-Runs
Every month, SASSA looks at your bank account inflows for the preceding calendar month. If total credits (from any source: wages, transfers, EFTs from family, sold goods, freelance jobs) exceed R628, you fail the means test for that month and your status flips to Declined.
Read the full mechanics on the dedicated eligibility and means test page. The critical thing to understand for reconfirmation is that:
- The R628 threshold is calculated fresh every month.
- Any single credit above R628 in one month can decline that month, even if the rest of the month is empty.
- SASSA looks at all accounts linked to your ID, not just the one you gave for payment.
- Cash income (informal work, tips, side jobs) is not visible to SASSA and is not counted, but any deposit of that cash into a bank account becomes visible.
Which Databases SASSA Checks Each Month
Home Affairs (DHA)
Confirms your ID is still active, that you are alive, and that no name change is pending. A recent death registration or ID block instantly declines the file.
Banks (via BASA)
SASSA pulls the previous month's credits across every account under your ID. This is what feeds the R628 means test.
UIF
Checks whether you are drawing Unemployment Insurance benefits. UIF and SRD cannot be received in the same month.
SARS
Checks for a recent PAYE registration. New employment in the last 60 days will decline the file.
SASSA internal grants
Confirms you do not already receive another SASSA grant (SRD is exclusive to those with no other grant income).
NSFAS
New in 2025. Confirms you are not receiving NSFAS funding, which counts as sufficient income under the current directions.
Why Your Status Flipped to Pending Again
You got Approved and paid last month. This month the status is Pending. Nothing changed on your side. What happened?
- Nothing unusual. Every SRD file resets to Pending on the 1st of the month. Give it 10 to 14 days for the re-verification to complete before you worry.
- A bank inflow crossed R628 in the previous calendar month. Log in to your bank app and add up every credit for the prior month.
- SARS registered a new tax number for you. If a temporary or part-time employer submitted PAYE for you, SARS flags you as employed.
- Home Affairs updated your record. A name change, ID block, or marital status change triggers re-verification.
- You updated banking details in the last 7 days. The status holds at Pending while AVS runs; see the bank verification failed guide.
- National verification backlog. During high-demand months (December, June), Pending can persist for up to 21 days.
Do I Need to Reapply Each Month?
No. This is the single biggest myth about the SRD. Reconfirmation is automatic. You do not open a new application each month.
The only times you do need to actively act each month are:
- Your file was Declined and you want to appeal (30-day window per the appeals guide).
- You changed cellphones and the OTP no longer reaches you (phone number update guide).
- You changed banks (banking details update guide).
- You want to change your pay channel (bank to CashSend, etc.).
The 3-Month Non-Reconfirmation Rule
Your file stays automatically active as long as you check your status at least once every three months. If three consecutive months pass with no status check and no payment received, SASSA lapses the file and you must reapply as a new applicant.
Action Plan When Your Status Resets
- Confirm today's date is between the 1st and the 15th of the month; if so, Pending is normal.
- Wait until day 10 before assuming anything is wrong.
- On day 10 to 12, run your SASSA status check. Note whether the outcome is Pending, Approved, or Declined.
- If Declined, note the reason shown. Common reasons are covered in the application status outcomes guide.
- If the reason is "alternative income identified" and you know your bank inflow was below R628, request a reconsideration via the appeals process within 30 days.
- If Approved but no payment lands by the 28th, check that AVS passed via the bank verification failed guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did SASSA approve me last month and decline me this month?
Something changed in the databases SASSA checks. Most often it is a bank inflow that pushed you over R628 last month, or a temporary employer that submitted PAYE for you at SARS. Neither counts as a permanent income change and both are appealable.
How long does the monthly reconfirmation usually take?
7 to 14 days from the 1st of the month. Occasionally 21 days when volumes are high, especially in December and June.
Will my back-payment be released if I win a reconsideration for a past month?
Yes. Once the appeal succeeds, SASSA releases the outstanding month(s) as a lump-sum catch-up, usually within 30 days of the successful appeal decision.
Can I have someone else check my status for me each month?
Yes, if they have your ID number and the cellphone number on your file, or use the WhatsApp bot with your consent. However, submitting appeals or changing details requires your own action or a legal power of attorney.
What happens if I miss reconfirmation for 3 months?
Your file lapses. You must reapply as a new applicant via the SRD portal. Previous decline history does not follow the new application, so a clean reapply often succeeds.
Does SASSA notify me when my status changes?
An SMS is sent to the cellphone on your file when the outcome is Approved or Declined. There is no SMS for Pending status. If you have not received the SMS by day 14, check the portal manually.
