The Postbank Gold Card was meant to be gone by June. It was not. Roughly 238,000 SASSA beneficiaries still swipe the old card at ATMs and till points every month, and Postbank has spent the winter running voluntary swap drives instead of switching to enforcement. That is about to change. The first hard block lands in exactly 16 days, and Postbank has made it clear this deadline does not move again.

What Actually Changes at 07h00 on 1 October
Postbank has published a three-stage enforcement calendar for the Gold Card retirement. Only the first stage is 16 days away, but the sequence matters because it explains why swapping in October is far less painful than waiting for November or December.

Your money is not lost when the card blocks
A blocked Gold Card does not delete your SASSA grant. The balance stays on your Postbank account and moves to the new Black Card once you activate it. The block only stops the old plastic being used at ATMs or tills. Grants keep paying in on the normal schedule.
Who Still Holds a Gold Card
Postbank's 10 September tracker shows the remaining Gold Card holders concentrated in a small number of provinces. If you are anywhere in Gauteng or the Western Cape, queue times are still manageable. Everywhere else, the last two weeks of September will be tight, and this is already the second-last week.

Older Persons and Disability Grant recipients are the largest cohort
About 71 percent of the remaining Gold Card holders receive the Older Persons or Disability grant. If you are helping a parent or grandparent, this is the fortnight to book the swap. Older Persons Grant recipients get priority queue tickets at Postbank branches on production of their green ID book or smart ID card.
The 10-Minute Swap
The swap is simpler than most beneficiaries expect. There is no application form, no waiting list, no fee, and no cool-off period. You walk in with a Gold Card and an ID and walk out with a Black Card that already has your account attached.
Step 1. Take your Gold Card and your green ID book or smart ID card to any Postbank branch, any SASSA local office, or any of the 640 Post Office branches Postbank has enabled for card swaps.
Step 2. Tell the queue teller you are there for the Gold Card swap. You will be given a queue slip. Older Persons and Disability Grant recipients get a priority slip.
Step 3. At the counter, hand over the Gold Card and ID. The teller cancels the Gold Card in the Postbank system on the spot and issues a Black Card linked to the same account. Verification is by fingerprint (SASSA biometric) or by PIN if fingerprint fails.
Step 4. You choose a new four-digit PIN at the counter. This is not the old Gold Card PIN. It will not work at any ATM until you have done a balance enquiry with it once inside the Postbank branch.
Step 5. Leave. The old Gold Card is destroyed at the counter (cut in front of you). Any funds sitting on the Gold Card at the moment of swap are already in your Postbank account, so they move over automatically.
Best time to swap in the next 16 days
Weekday mornings between 09h00 and 11h00 (after the retirement queues clear and before the lunch rush). Avoid the two days after payment date, when the retirees who have already collected want to also swap in a single trip. Fridays are the worst day of the week in September; Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the calmest.
Three Scams Already Doing the Rounds
Every deadline of this size has attracted scams for the past two years. Three are already active in the countdown to 1 October. If you see them, do not engage.
Scam 1: The "priority swap" WhatsApp. A WhatsApp message offers a "priority queue booking" for the Gold Card swap in exchange for R50 to R100 EFT. Postbank does not sell queue tickets and does not use WhatsApp for swap bookings.
Scam 2: The "home-visit swap" caller. A caller offers to come to a beneficiary's home to do the swap for a fee, especially targeting Older Persons Grant recipients. Postbank does no home visits for card swaps. Every swap must be done in-branch with the account holder present.
Scam 3: The "Gold Card will re-activate" hoax. Facebook posts claim that the 1 October block is temporary and the Gold Card will re-activate in November. This is false. The block is permanent, and the November stage tightens it further.
Check your card status without leaving the house

What Happens If You Miss 1 October
Missing 1 October is not fatal. Your grant still pays into the account. You just cannot pull cash from a Postbank ATM until you swap. You can still cash out at any Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer or Usave till, but only until 1 November. From 2 November your Gold Card is completely dead as a payment instrument, and the only route to your money is a same-day swap at a Postbank branch.
Missing 31 December is where it starts to hurt. The card is permanently deactivated. New payments still land in the account, but you cannot access them until you swap. Postbank has committed to running weekend swap drives through January and February 2027 for the tail of the cohort, but a beneficiary who missed December will likely lose access to January's grant for at least the first week of the month.
