SASSA has just published a notice pinning down the final COVID-19 SRD payment dates for August 2026. The three-day window is Monday 24 August, Tuesday 25 August and Wednesday 26 August 2026. Every approved R370 payment for the month should reflect inside those three days, in the order SASSA's bulk-payment system releases each batch.

On the same notice the agency also announced something the SRD community has been waiting on since the portal overloads earlier this year: a dedicated WhatsApp self-service channel for COVID-19 SRD beneficiaries, running on a brand-new number, 082 601 0111. This article walks through both, in the order you actually need them.

The Final August 2026 SRD Payment Dates

Unlike the Older Person's Grant, which pays on a fixed calendar date, the COVID-19 SRD pays in daily batches inside a short window announced by SASSA at the end of each month. For August 2026 that window is the three consecutive banking days below.

24MondayBatch 1 opens
25TuesdayBulk payment day
26WednesdayFinal batch clears

The exact day your R370 lands depends on which batch your file is assigned to. SASSA does not publish the batching rule, but in practice bank-deposit beneficiaries usually clear on 24-25 August, and retail-collection beneficiaries (Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers, USave) usually clear on 25-26 August. Do not act on rumours that specific ID number ranges pay on specific days, this is not how SASSA batches SRD.

Approved does not always mean paid on day one

If your status shows Approved but no money reflects on 24 August, that is normal. Give the window the full three days. Only escalate if there is still no payment after end-of-day on Wednesday 26 August. For the confirmed month-by-month schedule going forward, keep the SRD Payment Dates page bookmarked.

New: The 082 601 0111 WhatsApp Self-Service Line

This is the bigger story on the same notice. SASSA is launching a WhatsApp channel specifically for COVID-19 SRD beneficiaries, so it does not share a queue with older-person, child-support and disability-grant questions. It is fully automated, meaning replies come back in seconds instead of the 10-plus minute wait on the general line.

According to the SASSA notice the service allows beneficiaries to access key information without visiting offices or calling the Call Centre. That framing matters. The Call Centre (0800 60 10 11) has been the choke point for SRD queries for years, with wait times running past 30 minutes on payment week. Migrating routine status and pay-date questions to an automated WhatsApp channel is designed to bring those wait times down.

What the channel can do on day one

  1. Status check for the current month (Approved, Pending, Declined).
  2. Pay date lookup once the batch is released.
  3. Reapplication reminders for months where you have not yet applied.
  4. Appeal status for a month you have already lodged an appeal on.
  5. Banking-details update prompts when SASSA cannot pay a payment method.
  6. Escalation to a live agent only if the automated flow cannot answer, which pushes fewer users into the call queue.

How to use it (in three messages)

  1. Save 082 601 0111 as "SASSA SRD" from the same phone number that is registered on your SRD application. If the numbers do not match, the automated flow will not recognise you.
  2. Open WhatsApp, send Hi to the contact you just saved, and wait for the menu to load. Reply with the number of the option you want (for example, 1 for status).
  3. Follow the prompts. The bot will ask for your 13-digit ID number and confirm the reply against the number on your SRD file. No PIN, no password, no OTP.

082 601 0111 is a new number, not a replacement

The older SASSA WhatsApp line, 082 046 8553, still works for general grant queries. The new 082 601 0111 line is specifically for COVID-19 SRD. Save both, and use the new one for anything SRD-related, so the automated flow can route you correctly.

Why the Poster Shows Card, Face, Coins and Fingerprint

Look closely at the SASSA notice above and you will see icons for a bank card, a facial-recognition frame, a stack of coins and a fingerprint. This is not decorative. It signals the four verification channels that will govern SRD access going forward: card verification (Postbank Black or bank-issued), facial biometrics (already live for the appeals portal), cash collection at retail, and fingerprint biometrics at SASSA offices for anyone whose face verification fails.

The immediate implication for August 2026 is small: if you already receive your R370 into a personal bank account in your name, nothing changes. If you collect in cash and have been asked to complete a Postbank Black onboarding, this is the reminder that the biometric requirement is not going away. Our earlier piece on the SASSA biometric crackdown covers exactly what to bring to a branch.

If Your Payment Does Not Arrive by 26 August

The window closes on Wednesday 26 August. If your status is still Approved but no money has cleared by the end of that day, work through this sequence before phoning the Call Centre.

  1. Verify your status once more on the free SRD Status Check. If it still says Approved with no pay date, note the exact wording of the message.
  2. Check that your bank account holder name matches your ID exactly. A mismatch is the single most common reason a payment gets reversed after approval. Fix it via the banking details update flow.
  3. Message the new WhatsApp line (082 601 0111) with Pay date. The bot will confirm whether SASSA has generated one for you, or whether the batch is still processing.
  4. If nothing above resolves it, visit the payment not received guide for the exact office-visit checklist and the escalation script for the Call Centre.

Scam alert around the new number

Within hours of any SASSA rollout, fake accounts appear on WhatsApp asking for your ID number, banking PIN or an OTP in exchange for "unlocking" your payment. SASSA will never ask for a PIN or OTP on WhatsApp. The two official lines are 082 601 0111 (COVID-19 SRD self-service) and 082 046 8553 (general SASSA queries). Anything else is a scam.

How to Sidestep the Portal Overload

The last two payment weeks of the month are exactly when the SASSA portal hits its rate-limit and shows the too many requests error. That is the very moment beneficiaries want to check their status. The new WhatsApp channel is the cleanest workaround for August 2026, but it is not the only one, and our detailed guide on the SRD portal overload covers four independent channels that all read from the same underlying database.

Line up your August 2026 payment

Check your status in under 30 seconds on the SRD Status Check, confirm the batch on the SRD Payment Dates page, and message 082 601 0111 if you need a pay-date confirmation from SASSA itself. Full eligibility, means-test rules and appeals live on the main SRD grant page.
