The SASSA SRD portal is back online, the September 2026 payment window has opened, and the countdown to the biggest structural change to South Africa's social relief system in six years is now inside 200 days. This is the September 2026 status report for every R370 recipient: what to expect over the next four weeks, and the transition tasks worth clearing before the March 2027 cut-off.

The September 2026 SRD Payment Window

SASSA released the September 2026 SRD payment schedule on Friday, 11 September 2026, about a week after the portal was fully restored. The department is running a 15 to 30 September window, which is three days shorter than the August window (which stretched into 26 August) because of the outage backlog carried into early September.

The SRD amount is still R370 in September

The Pretoria High Court ruling in early August 2026 opened the door to a potential increase to R450 in line with the food poverty line. Nothing has changed yet. September, October, November and December 2026 all pay out at R370. Any change would only take effect once the Livelihoods Grant switches on in April 2027, and only if National Treasury signs off on the amount.

The Portal Is Back, But Different

The SRD portal at srd.sassa.gov.za returned on Thursday, 3 September 2026, after being offline since Friday 28 August. The full outage lasted six calendar days. SASSA did not issue a formal statement, but the restored front-end shows several signals that this was a planned platform upgrade that overran, not a security incident.

The restored portal introduces a light-weight queue system during peak periods. Between 07h00 and 10h00 on weekdays, and again in the last hour of any pay day, applicants are shown a "You are number N in the queue" holding page rather than a hard error. Wait times vary from 30 seconds to about 7 minutes at the worst peak we observed on Tuesday 8 September. Refreshing the page loses your place.

Do not close the tab during the queue

If the queue page loads, keep the tab open and leave your phone alone. Closing the tab or refreshing sends you back to the end of the queue. Use WhatsApp on 082 601 0111 in a second tab if you need a status right now.

WhatsApp Is Now the Default Status-Check Channel

The single biggest quiet change SASSA has rolled out since the outage is that WhatsApp is now the default status-check surface. The dedicated self-service line 082 601 0111, launched at the end of August, has been extended twice in the first two weeks of September. It now handles four query types without a portal login:

1. SRD status. Send "status" and your 13-digit ID number. Response in under 30 seconds.

2. Payment date. Send "date". Returns your allocated payment date for the current window and the payment channel on file.

3. Banking detail check. Send "bank". Confirms the account SASSA will pay into, so you can catch a mismatch before pay day.

4. Appeal status. Send "appeal". Returns the current stage of any open SRD appeal and the SASSA reference number.

Save both official WhatsApp numbers

SASSA now runs two WhatsApp lines. 082 046 8553 is the older general SASSA line for all grants. 082 601 0111 is the dedicated SRD self-service line. Save both to your phone. Any other WhatsApp number claiming to be SASSA is a scam.

Appeals: The 30-Day Clock Restarted on 3 September

The SRD appeal window is 30 days from the date SASSA sends the decline SMS. During the six-day portal outage, the appeal form was unavailable. SASSA has confirmed that the 30-day clock for any decline dated between 28 August and 3 September 2026 restarted on Thursday, 3 September. This means the earliest affected appeals are due by 3 October 2026.

Appeals for August pay dates that were rejected on the R624 means-test threshold are being processed faster than in July, thanks to a batch clearance that ran alongside the portal restoration. Turnaround for a straightforward means-test appeal is now about 11 days from submission to a first response, down from 24 days in July.

The SCA appeal is still pending

The state's Supreme Court of Appeal case, filed on 26 August, has not yet been set down for hearing. Expect a hearing date announcement in October. Nothing in the appeal affects September, October, November or December 2026 payments. See our SCA appeal explainer for the four regulation pillars in dispute.

The 200-Day Countdown to the Livelihoods Grant

The R370 SRD ends at midnight on 31 March 2027. The Livelihoods Grant switches on the next morning, 1 April 2027. That is 200 days from today. The transition is not automatic. Recipients who complete the four steps below will keep continuity into the new grant. Those who do not may face a two-cycle gap in payments while SASSA reprocesses them.

Step Do by Where
1. Update banking details to a personal account in your own name (no third parties, no shared accounts).31 October 2026Portal, WhatsApp "bank", or any SASSA office.
2. Confirm cellphone number is active and registered to you (RICA'd in your name).30 November 2026WhatsApp "number" or portal Profile tab.
3. Do the e-Life certification if you were 60 or older on 1 September 2026 (the SRD is now included).15 December 2026See our e-Life 2026 guide.
4. Sign the Livelihoods Grant consent form when it goes live in January 2027.28 February 2027Portal notification. We will publish a walkthrough the day it opens.

What happens if you miss the deadlines

Missing step 1 or 2 does not cancel your SRD in September to March. It only stops the automatic migration to the Livelihoods Grant on 1 April 2027. You would have to reapply from scratch through the new portal, likely with a two-month payment gap while SASSA revalidates your ID and means-test.

The Scam Wave Around the Transition

Two scam patterns have surged in the past fortnight, both piggy-backing on the portal outage and the Livelihoods Grant switch. If you see either, do not engage.

Pattern 1: "Livelihoods Grant pre-registration." WhatsApp forwards claiming SASSA has opened a pre-registration form for the Livelihoods Grant, with a shortened link asking for ID, cellphone, and a "R50 admin fee". SASSA has not opened any pre-registration. The consent form only goes live in January 2027, is free, and only appears inside the official portal.

Pattern 2: "Portal restoration fee." Text messages claiming SASSA needs a R25 fee to "reactivate your SRD profile" after the August outage. There is no reactivation fee. Profiles were not deactivated during the outage; only the web front-end was.

The Four-Week September Checklist

Week of 15 September: Check WhatsApp "date" to see your allocated pay day. Withdraw within 24 hours if you use Postbank ATM; leave in the account otherwise.

Week of 22 September: Confirm your banking detail is still correct via WhatsApp "bank". Any change made this week only takes effect from October.

Week of 29 September: If you have not been paid by 30 September, escalate through WhatsApp "escalate" or the 0800 60 10 11 helpline. Give SASSA five working days to respond before opening a formal complaint.

Week of 6 October: Start the transition checklist. First deadline (banking detail update) is 31 October.
