SASSA SRD Reference Number: Find, Retrieve & Verify
Your SASSA reference number is the receipt SASSA gives you when your SRD R370 application is accepted onto the system. It confirms your application exists, tracks the review outcome each month, and appears alongside every payment. Most people never see it after the confirmation SMS, then panic when a call centre agent asks for it. This guide shows exactly what an SRD reference number looks like, where to find it after you have lost the original SMS, how to retrieve it through the portal, WhatsApp or the call centre, and how to tell it apart from your application ID and your ID number when you run a status check.

What Is an SRD Reference Number?
An SRD reference number is a unique application identifier that SASSA generates the moment your R370 application is captured into the SOCPEN system. It stays attached to your file for the life of the grant. Every subsequent status update, decline reason, appeal, payment run and audit ties back to this single number.
You do not create it and you cannot choose it. SASSA issues it once the application is accepted, and it is the same reference month after month even though your monthly reconfirmation re-runs the means test on that file.
What Does an SRD Reference Number Look Like?
The standard SRD R370 reference is a 12 to 14 character alphanumeric string. It starts with a letter prefix that identifies the application channel, followed by the year of first application, and then a unique sequence.
Example: SR-2025-8471293
- SR prefix: standard SRD web-portal application.
- WA prefix: WhatsApp channel applications.
- US prefix: USSD channel applications.
- The four-digit block is the year of the original application (2020 through 2026).
- The final block is a system-generated unique sequence.
Where SASSA First Sends Your Reference Number
SMS confirmation
Within 24 hours of your application, SASSA sends an SMS from short-code 43510 or 43570 that reads "Your SASSA SRD application has been received. Reference: SR-YYYY-XXXXXXX". This is the primary delivery channel.
Email confirmation
If you entered an email during application, the same reference is sent from [email protected]. Check spam and promotions folders. Not all applicants provide an email so this may be blank.
WhatsApp confirmation
If you applied via the SASSA WhatsApp bot on 082 046 8553, the reference is replied inside the same chat thread. Do not delete the chat until you have the number saved elsewhere.
Portal dashboard
After you log into srd.sassa.gov.za with your ID and cellphone OTP, the reference is shown at the top of the dashboard alongside the current status. This is the most reliable channel if the SMS is lost.
How to Find Your Reference Number If You Lost the SMS
The easiest and fastest recovery route is the SRD portal itself. You do not need the reference number to log in, only your ID and cellphone. Once logged in, the system shows you the reference on the dashboard.
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za in a browser (Chrome or Safari works best).
- Click How Do I Check My Application Status?
- Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and the cellphone number linked to your SASSA file.
- Request an OTP; a 6-digit code is sent to your cellphone.
- Enter the OTP and submit. Your dashboard opens and the reference number is displayed at the top, next to the status for the current month.
- Save the reference in your phone contacts as "SASSA REF" so you always have it to hand.
Retrieve Your Reference Through Every Official Channel
| Channel | How to use | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| SRD portal | srd.sassa.gov.za, dashboard shows the reference after OTP login | ID number, active cellphone on file |
| WhatsApp bot | Message "Hi" to 082 046 8553, follow prompts, choose "Status & Reference" | ID number, cellphone on file |
| USSD | Dial *120*3210# on the cellphone linked to the file, choose Reference Lookup | Cellphone on file (no data needed) |
| Call centre | Dial 0800 60 10 11, ask for reference lookup, agent confirms after identity questions | ID number, cellphone on file, patience (queue times vary) |
| Moya App | Free datafree SASSA channel inside Moya, request reference recovery | ID number, cellphone on file |
| In branch | Nearest SASSA local office prints a reference confirmation letter | Green barcoded ID or Smart ID card in person |
Reference Number vs Application ID vs ID Number
SASSA support agents ask for different numbers at different times, and getting them mixed up wastes time on the call. Here is the plain difference:
SRD reference number
The alphanumeric receipt for your R370 application (e.g. SR-2025-8471293). Used to track that specific SRD file, request appeals, and confirm payments.
South African ID number
Your 13-digit national ID from Home Affairs. It is the master key SASSA uses to log you in and to match records across SARS, UIF, and banks. Never share this with anyone who is not SASSA staff.
Application ID / SOCPEN ID
An internal SASSA record number. Agents may quote it during a call but you do not need it to check status. If a caller asks you for a SOCPEN ID, that is a red flag that they are not from SASSA.
How to Verify a Reference Number Is Real
Scam SMS messages routinely include fake reference numbers to look official. Verify any reference you are unsure about like this:
- Log in to srd.sassa.gov.za with your ID and cellphone. If the reference on your dashboard matches the SMS, it is real.
- Cross-check on WhatsApp 082 046 8553. Ask for the reference on your file and confirm it is the same string.
- The only valid prefixes are SR, WA, US. Anything else (REF, PAY, R123) is not an SRD application reference.
- The middle block must be a real year between 2020 and the current year. Future years are always fake.
- If a reference is being sent to you asking for a payment, a fee, or bank details, it is a scam, no exceptions. SASSA never charges to release an R370.
You Never Received a Reference Number, What That Means
If more than 48 hours have passed since you applied and no SMS, email, or WhatsApp reply has arrived, one of the following happened:
- The application never reached SOCPEN because of a portal error or a duplicate check flagged it. Log in to the portal to see whether an application actually exists.
- The cellphone number you provided was wrong by one digit. Use the phone number change guide to correct it, but note that until it is corrected no SMS will reach you.
- You already had a live SRD file and a duplicate was rejected. The original file's reference is still live; retrieve it via the portal.
- SASSA network delays. During high volume months, SMS delivery can take up to 72 hours. Wait three business days before assuming failure.
If none of the above apply and the portal shows no application on file, treat it as a failed submission and reapply following the how to apply guide.
Reference Numbers and Fraud Protection
Your reference number by itself cannot be used to steal money from you. What criminals want is the combination of reference + ID + cellphone OTP + banking details. The reference is only the way to look up the file; the OTP is the key that unlocks changes.
For further hardening on the banking side, see the banking details update guide, which explains the OTP flow for changing pay channels and the 7-day cooling-off period SASSA enforces on account changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my SRD reference number change each month?
No. The reference stays the same for the life of the SRD file. Only the monthly status outcome changes. If you see a completely new reference, a new application was opened and the old one may have been closed.
Can I check my SRD status without a reference number?
Yes. The srd.sassa.gov.za status tool only needs your ID number and cellphone. The reference is useful for phone calls to the call centre and for lodging appeals, but not for the online status check itself.
Is the SRD reference the same as a SASSA card number?
No. The SASSA card number is the 16-digit number embossed on your gold SASSA card (which is used for the older person's or child support grants, not typically the SRD). The SRD reference is a separate alphanumeric application ID.
What if two different reference numbers show against my ID?
SASSA has picked up a duplicate application and both files are paused. Call 0800 60 10 11 or visit a SASSA local office with your green ID. They will keep the older file live and cancel the duplicate. Do not open a third application while this is being sorted out.
Do I quote my reference on every payment collection?
Only if the pay channel asks for it. Post Office and Postbank withdrawals rely on your ID; retail store collections (Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers) rely on your ID and the once-off PIN sent by SMS. Bank payments land automatically without you quoting anything.
How do I get an official reference letter from SASSA?
Visit any SASSA local office with your green ID or Smart ID card and ask for a "SRD confirmation letter". The letter is printed at the desk and shows your reference, current status, and last three payment records.
